August 1923. This is the only harvest photo that is marked with a date. I believe these men are carrying sheaves of grain and stacking them up into shocks that will eventually be loaded onto a wagon to await the threshing machine. A sheave or sheaf of grain is a bundle that can be carried under one arm.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
I have enjoyed these early farming days pictures Connie.
ReplyDeleteA lot of empty sky in this picture. I can't get over the amount of manual labor involved - the only other crop that I've ever seen personally that is so labor-intense is harvesting Blueberries.
ReplyDeleteCarrying sheaves or carrying square bales, it is all the same. Heat and dust in the open field was so much not fun for me.
ReplyDeleteNow I can't stop singing 'Bringing in the Sheaves.'
