Photo Number 1124

Blog reader Jim asked for some help with this photo.

From Jim

This is a photo of his Great Great Grandfather William, he was a grocers assistant in England and then later a miner.  He was born in 1839 and died in 1881 at the age of 42.  He came to the United States from England.

When do you think this portrait was made?  Was it made from a photo..in some kind of process?  Is it part photo and part drawing?

How old do you this this gentleman was ?

Any input is appreciated.

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

Cabinet CardFergus Falls Family DL Antiques

A young family from the Fergus Falls Minnesota area.  The photographer was Alldrin.  He was in Fergus Falls from 1894 to 1895.  So that is the date we will give this photo.

Again we have the top button buttoned on the jacket of the gentleman and the lady looks to have large sleeves that are very fitted from the elbow to the wrist, very much the style for 1895.

The littlest boy has a huge bow on his suit, and he held very still.  I cannot say the same for his sibling whose movements caused his/her image to be blurred.  During early photography the exposure times were very long so people sitting for photographs had to hold still for a long time.

This is a photo from the third antique shop in Dorset Minnesota.
Four blondes Dorset 3
Four beautiful light haired gals..perhaps sisters.  This photo is most likely from around 1900..give or take a few years...edited to 1910 to 1912.   Two of them are wearing gowns that appear to be pigeon breasted. The gal on the left has beautiful embroidery trimming her gown.

Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)
From Charlotta:
All four of the young ladies being blondes provides a first impression of uniformity but there are several overlapping dress and hair styles represented. The beautiful and very conservatively-styled dresses of the three seated ladies are suggestive of the first decade of the twentieth-century. However, the lady who is standing in back is much more fashion-forward/radical in the style of her dress and especially in her post-1908 hairstyle that point more towards the period of 1909 to 1914. So my guess at a photograph date would be circa 1910-'12.

The kids are a hoot in this photo..between books, hats, cameras and shoes they are obviously bored with the photographer..who doesn’t know how to center a photo.  It makes me wonder what was happening off camera.

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. Cabinet Card Two women DL Antiques

I bought this Cabinet Card because of the youngest girls skirt.  It is trimmed in some sort of a decorative braid.  The older woman’s skirt is also trimmed nicely.

The wicker chair is a great photographers prop.

The photographer was Maki and he was in Virginia Minnesota in 1901.  So that is the date I will give this photo.

CdV Man with hat Fergus Falls Antiques
Wm. Davis was at No.1 Cherry Street in Mankato Minn only one year 1885.  That is the year I would have guessed.  The suit coat buttoned once at the top seems to be a good clue for that year for men’s fashions.  Note the posing stand.  He must have thought his hat was quite important.
The card is pinkish beige on the front and cream on the back.
CdV Man with hat Fergus Falls Antiques back
There is some writing on the back of the card..in a foreign language.

If anyone has a clue what it says please leave me a comment.

Translation from crex:
"Schatz du bist mein und ich bin dein du geliebtes, Gustave". I guess the man on the photo is Gustave.

That would (aprox) translate to - Treasure, you are mine and I am yours, my dearest. Gustave.

Cabinet Card of a Man from Jen Grand Forks Antique Mall

A. P. Holand was the photographer at So. 3rd St. Grand Forks N. Dak

Albert P. Holand, Grand Forks photographer, 222 South Third. (1891-1892 Grand Forks Business Directory)

The young man wears wool trousers that are striped, his suit jacket and vest match, he wears a large tied tie (Relaxed Windsor Style) and holds a fur hat in his hand.  A necktie was often tied in a “four in hand knot”  If the tie was tightened up it was more of a half Windsor Style, if it was loosened up it was more of a full relaxed Windsor style.

This week we will look at some photographs of men. This Cabinet Card is from the antique shop in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Cabinet Card Man from jen Grand Forks Antique mall

The photographer is S. A. Eggan 251-3 Cedar Ave. Minneapolis.  I find an Eggan Studio at that address from 1890 through the 1920’s.  I think this photo is from the 1890’s.

The young man is wearing a frockcoat and the tie looks to me like one of those hand tied bow ties. He strikes a very dashing pose.

The year was marked on the back.  1951.

My Mother had fancy rubbers/overshoes like the ones these ladies are wearing..with a strip of fur at the top.  You wore your shoes inside the rubbers.  I had a pair..not fancy..just buckle overshoes..and they were hard to put on especially if your shoes were wet.  They kept your feet dry..but not warm.

Frances Risdon and her skates Duluth
Frances Risdon and her skates Duluth back
Frances Risdon is my best guess.  Her hat looks 1920’s to 1930’s to me.  I imagine the hat, coat and skirt to be red..how about you?  She looks like a teenager to me.
This could have been a photo taken in Duluth..the house in the background is built up high on the lot like many of the houses in Duluth.  Of course it could be many other cities in the snowy areas of this country.
Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)

Update from The Colonel:
Frances Elizabeth Risdon - born on October 25, 1906 in Saint Louis County [of which Duluth is the county seat]
Update From Iggy:
Frances Elizabeth Risdon (b. October 25, 1906) lived on 405 Vermillion Drive - and was a writer. Her parents were Ernest A. Risdon, a traffic manager(?) and Lida A nee Shultz. They are buried in Bee Ridge Cemetery, Edina, Knox County, Missouri. They moved to Missouri between 1930 and 1940 - with or without Frances (she doesn't appear in the 1940 US Census with them and presumably is married by then).
