1933 Chevrolet Winnipeg Antiques

The License plate says Ontario and 1934.  We think this may be a 1933 Chevrolet.

I am not sure what the occasion was..visiting relatives perhaps and just stopped at the side of the road to take a photo.. that Grandma looks like she won’t be giving up that baby anytime soon.

This week we will look at some old snapshots of cars.

This may have been taken in the Canadian Rockies.  I purchased this photo in an Antique Shop in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada.

The car is more than likely a 1933 Chevrolet. I love the way the suitcases are strapped to the back of the car.

Child and cat in a chair Wadena flea Market

The kitten is rather blurry, apparently it did not want to be in the photo.  You can see the reflection of the photographer in the window.

The fancy shape of the photo is something that I have see before but I am not sure how it was accomplished.  Perhaps one of my readers has an idea.

L.H. Linkonen (?) of Floodwood Minn was the photographer.  I could not find any information about him.

I liked this gals polka dot skirt and the bow in her hair.  She looks much younger than him..however her wedding band is very visible.  I will guess that this was taken in the late 1890’s to 1900.

November 1958 DL Antiques

November 1958 and this couple is going someplace..perhaps they have been to a wedding.  At first I thought a Prom..but usually Proms are held in the spring of the year.

I love looking around in the photo..noticing his cufflinks and that white shirt with the cuffs.  They are sitting on a piano or organ bench.  That wallpaper is a treat for your eyes and I recall those bronze horses too.  There is a clock between them that shows five minutes to nine..and I think he is holding a dark bottle in his left hand.

I am not sure what that poufy hem is called in the gals dress.  If I recall correctly..the dress is cut longer and the hem has a string that is pulled and then it is stitched in place to the can can slip so it is equally poufy all the way around..I bet it was itchy.  I seem to recall a paper slip too..and stuffing the poufs with tissue paper.  Perhaps a reader has actually worn a dress like the one pictured.

Update from Iggy
Alexander Beaulieu (b. c. 1845 in Wisconsin) married to Magdelane Beaulieu (b. c. 1853 in Germany) living in White Earth Agency, Becker, Minnesota working as a Farm Laborer. At that time they have four childred. The census shows his race as "Indian." In 1910, the family with one additional child is living in Township 146, Mahnomen, Minnesota, about 30 miles south of Fosston.

One of the Alex's daughters appears to have married a "Girard".

Update from a researcher on May 08 2012

Alex and Helen Kappell Beaulieu. I am doing research for a distant relative on the Kappell. They wouldn't know what the picture is about without my research. You can email it. Thank you. I'll ask the person if she wants the original. Helen Kappell came from Wisconsin and her husband was a half breed also from Wisconsin. I think he or his father was an Indian agent.

Most likely a 1920’s photo.  The finger waves in her hair are perfect.  Her dark jacket is worn with a very light colored blouse of some sort. She has flowers..which may or may not be for a special occasion.  He wears his very silky looking bow tie quite well.

Photo Number 791

Happy Valentines Day! We will continue the week looking at some photographs of couples..some happy..some not so much.

This is a Cabinet Card from The Third Antique Shop in Dorset Minnesota.

Unknown couple Dorset Antiques 3

Jensen Bros were the photographers, they were in Albert Lea and Alden Minnesota from 1898 to 1900. The woman's dress seems to fit with that time frame, her dress has sleeves that are puffy at the top and tighter as the sleeve comes down the arm, the dress looks to be made of a heavy brocade fabric. The bodice has some similar fabric which is accentuated with a lighter color leaf or some such thing.  She wears a brooch at her neck.   Her hair is severe and pulled back into a bun of some sort. I think her arm is being held strangely..almost as if she had to position it just so.

The gentleman seems so imposing..yet I noticed that his tie is striped, which is mostly hidden by the facial hair.

This photo is not marked.

I think this may be the last Full Circle Monday for a little while..no photos have been mailed out recently.

This full circle was helped along by Iggy and Abra.  If I am ever lost..these two should be able to find me! They are awesome researchers.  Many thanks!  I mailed the photos to Ron in Isle Minnesota he is the son/grandson of Stephen and Agnes.

Mother and Baby Dorset 3

Photo Number 778

I bought this photo at the same antique shop, it is the same photographer that took the photo of Agnes Brown and her son Stephen.  The women look similar.  Similar enough for me to include this photo with the other one.

I heard back from Ron and Karen:

Hi Connie, thanks for sending us this information, as this is my grandmother, we have never seen this picture before. I'm sure this is my grandmother.

I have attached a note and another picture of some of my dads brothers and sisters

We got your letter, picture, and what a surprise. The picture #777 is Ron's grandmother Agnes holding Ron's dad, Steve, but Steve was born in 1904. We had never seen this picture before. We do know that Steve was from a very large family. Steve's mother Agnes was married to David Brown and they had eight children. After David passed away Agnes married her sisters(who had passed away) husband, and they had more kids I think, plus his from his first wife. Steve always said that he had 14 brothers and sisters. Picture #781 is Steve's sister Leatha Brown, One of 5 sisters. Picture #778 could be Agnes, we don’t know. We are comparing it to an old photo that we have here. We don’t know who she is holding but it has to be one of her first kids. We have an interesting photo that we are sending to you. But there's no date on it so we don’t know what year it was taken.

Thank you so much, you gave us lots to think about.

Here is the photo they sent.

Phillips from Lake City was the photographer.  John Phillips was there in 1878 and 1879.  He was a very prolific photographer and three of his sons were also photographers ( C.A.  F.H. and Wellington J.).  C. A. Phillips was in business in the 1890’s in Lake City.

Update from Futura:
Tricorn style hats were fairly popular in 1917 and 1918. This outfit is actually quite typical for the late 1910s and most likely would have been marketed as a "Walking Suit" underneath the jacket would have been a lightweight blouse of some sort, with a low-ish neckline, in a light or pale color that did not register in this photo.

Lets look at some hats this week!  This is a Cabinet Card from the Antique Shop in  Motley Minnesota.

This ladies hat is on the chair..apparently she did not want to wear the hat but she wanted it in the photograph.  I am always wondering what color the dresses were…green..blue??  We also have a great view of the chair with all the trim.

This Cabinet Card is more than likely from the late 1880’s. The Photographer is O.B. Halstead of Unionville, Missouri. When I searched for info on him..I found that he is rumored to be a relative of King William of Holland.

He wrote back:

That's me, sure enough; or, I should say, that was me, back in the day. My four year old grandson's going to get a kick out of it. How did you ever find it and where?
Thanks Ed...

I wrote back that I got it at an antique store in Detroit Lakes Minnesota…and that it was a bit of a hobby.

Ed wrote:

What a neat hobby; and also, what a nice gesture. My youngest daughter says she’d love to have the old photo and we’d appreciate having it.

I remember vacationing in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. My Aunt, uncle and two cousins lived there. My mother must’ve given the old photo, of me, to her sister, and who knows how it ended up where you found it? Anyway, Thank both you and your researcher for finding me. Isn’t facebook just the best?
Thanks again, Ed…

I didn’t hear anything for a long time…I finally sent him a message ..yes he got the photo and declined to share any more information.

In the 1905 Minnesota Census, residing in Parkers Prairie, I find Peter Taugelen, age 28, with Lavern, age 4, and Lavon, age 9/12. The surname could be Taugelin, Tangelin or Tangelen.

Cabinet Card Solway Uncle John and H Von Koch

He looks very tall. She is holding his arm..which at this time would have been a great show of affection!   Her dress  has a ruffled trim along the hem.

On a side note.  I have looked at some of the traveling gowns/dresses in the museum.  Many of the black ones have different trims hand sewn along the bottom.  I was told that the bottoms of the dresses got soiled easily and this was one way to keep them cleaner.  One old lady remarked “They had to have extra trims for the bottom hems of their dresses because men spit their tobacco out in the street.”

Cabinet Card Solway back Uncle John and H Von Koch

This may be Uncle John and H. Von Koch.  I have no idea why Eden Valley, Minn was scratched out and Berlin, Germany was entered.

The Photographer E. K. Gesme was in Eden Valley from 1894 top 1895.   Perhaps he took a trip to Germany and took photographs while he was there.

*** A photo of Einar as an adult was emailed to me yesterday..I added it to yesterdays post!

Update from Abra:
Leatha Lavina Brown was born June 5, 1905 in Maine Praire Township, Stearns County Minnesota. She married August Henry Schauer in 1926. She died at age 57, on April 7, 1953, in Hutchinson, McLeod County, MN (just a hop & skip down the road from me). According to the Schauer family tree, she had 3 children, now all deceased: Beverly Genevieve (1927-1994), Colleen (1929-1930), and Bruce Leroy (1935-1974).

Update from Iggy:
I think they had one more son, an August David ((1928 - 1987) who had a couple children too. August was a teacher in Minneapolis.

Update from relatives:  Leatha is Stephen Brown's sister..their Mother is Agnes Brown.

Einar has gone home!

Einar Full Cirlce 45

Photo Number 129

Researcher Abra worked tirelessly to return this photo to family.  He appeared on  March 10, 2010 almost two years ago.  With just one name Einar and the Ishpeming Michigan location.

Abra wrote:

I may have found Einar. I compared an adult photo to this one, and the smile, hair color, and eyes all appear the same. I sent a message to the tree owner and keeping my fingers crossed that Einar will be no longer forgotten. He's been one of my soft spots over the years! ;-) Abra

Then:

I sent this to another person that has Einar Werner in his private family tree. Perhaps he is a grandson of Einar. (I really hope this is the right Einar, and I believe it is). I hope someone wants him home! ~Abra

Finally Success!

A comment from Sharon:

Hello, I was contacted by Abra regarding your Photo of Einar.
His name is Einar Axel WARNER(later WERNER)he was born July of 1893 in Ishpeming, Marquette Co, Michigan.
His Parents actually met on the ship coming from Bersbo, Värna, Östergotland, Sweden in 1888. His father was Stephen "Emil" VARNER (WERNER)b.1867 in Bersbo, Värna, Östergotland, Sweden and his mother was Amanda Christina HOLMGREN b. 17 July 1867 in Bersbo, Värna, Östergotland, Sweden.
On the ships roster "Emil" was destined for Ishpeming (line92) and Amanda was bound for New York....he must have changed her mind, because they both came to Ishpeming and were married in 1889. Amanda is the sister of my 3rd great grandfather, Anders Frederick (A.F.) HOLMGREN who married Johanna HAGLOF. Anders was killed in a mine in Ishpeming in 1903. at the age of 55.

Sharon wrote:

Einar has arrived! I will scan him in and add his image to my ancestry .com tree.

Thank you again, For the great service you are doing. Sharon

She also wrote that  if a family member that is more closely related show ups..she will mail them the photo.

I have used that photo of Einar in several headers at the top of this blog. Perhaps that was always a reminder to Abra to keep looking.

Thanks Abra..and Congratulation on finding Einar a home!
