This is a homemade Valentine Card that I purchased at the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

Feb 1929  Valentine Greetings Lovingly Walter Hanewald

Walter must be 7 years and 4 months old and his brother Harold 4 years 4 months old.  At one time this may have been glued into a photo album or scrapbook because it has black fuzzy residue on the back.

Harold E. "Doc" Hanewald was born on October 31, 1923, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to William and Marvel (Bradt) Hanewald. He graduated from Hazen High School in Hazen, ND in 1941. Harold served his country in the US Navy during WWII. Harold died July 13 2012.

Walter Hanewald died just a few day ago in North Dakota. (February 4 2016)  He was a Doctor.

The photographer was Bowman & Lyden of Fergus Falls Minnesota,  Edna S Bowman was the photographer located at 107 1/2 Mill Street North in Fergus Falls.  The second pose most definitely shows a woman’s touch.

The one button being buttoned on the suit jacket was used extensively by photographers  from the 1860’s then again in the 1870’s into the late 1880’s.  This cabinet card has rounded edges that were popular 1889 to 1896.

Andrew Stainer's parents were Anton and Mary. Andrew was born November 10 1857 in Wisconsin and he died June 21 1919 in Ohio and he was buried in Kansas The brothers I found were William and Theodore.

Here, that was in the Wisconsin State Census of 1905. The couple with four daughters is living in Port Washington City, Ozaukee. William A. Stainer is working as a miller. His parents are stated to be born in Germany, her parents in Switzerland.

The 4 daughters:

Betty 12 years, *abt. 1893
Marie 9 years, *abt. 1896
Irene 7 years, *abt. 1898

In the 1920 Census Willaim A. Stainer, widower, is still living in Port Washington, Ozaukee, Wisconsin. In his household are the two daughters Bettie, age 27, and Marie, age 24

The 1930 Census shows William A. Stainer living as the father-in-law in the household of Adolph S. Roska, together with his daughter Betty L. Stainer Roska and two (grand)children in Port Washington, Ozaukee, Wisconsin.
The (grand)children are:

Betty L. Roska age 6, *abt. 1924 in Wisconsin

I believe this is Albert T (16 May 1903 - May 1976 in Lafayette, Nicollet, Minnesota and Arthur L Swenson (Nov. 18, 1908 - Nov. 25, 1943), the two sons of Peter O and Rosa Swenson of Cornish, Sibley, Minnesota which is less than ten miles from Lafayette. 

Albert married a Gladys and had a son named Kenneth.

Arthur married an Alice, I think he died childless.

This is the back of the CdVs.  Leicester is in England.  The CdVs have been trimmed down to fit a frame.  They look enough alike to be brothers.  They are wearing almost new looking suits.  I will guess that theses photos were taken in the 1870’s.

The last name could also be Dome…but the a in Raymond looks the same as the a in Dame.

Samuel T and his wife Sophia M Dame (1880 in Ohio - 1964) had sons Raymond H (1906 in South Dakota - 1929 in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio) and Oliver C (1909 in South Dakota) along with George, Frank W, Jane and Carl.

The father, Samuel T (1883-1919 at age 36) was born in South Dakota and lived in Prairie, Union, South Dakota with a half dozen brothers and sisters.

Sophia M. remarried, in 1930 she is with Frank W Russell and her children are listed as Frank's stepchildren. Sophia and Frank are also buried in the same cemetery as Raymond and Samuel.

Oliver C. Dame married Anna V. and had a son, Robert L. (20 Jan 1934) in Toledo, Ohio.

I don’t know if I wrote you since we moved in Sept. but anyhow we did into a place by ourselves now.  You don’t see much of the house here but the rest is for u to see when u come down.  How are you anyhow?  It seems there is quite a spell between our correspondense isn’t there?  Guess we are both really bussy house wives huh?  Haven’t we had the most lovely fall it has shortened the winter and of course we don’t mind.   In case you don’t know our family increased to 22 now! and that I have for Xmas day dinner but I just can’t make myself believe we’re so near Xmas because of the weather we’ve had.  Oh this snowfall did come in handy for this picture the only one we have had this year.  Do let us hear from you early next year huh? This is a photo from blog reader Tulla.

Here is the back of the photo. The photo was most likely taken in 1901.

I did find them in the 1910 Census. The parents of these boys were Ariston and Mary Lord who were both born in Maine.  In 1910 Ariston was a foreman of a lumber company.  I also found him in the 1880 census in Muskegon Michigan working in a mill.

The last time I can find the boys is the 1920 census, they are still living with their parents at 903 Beltrami Avenue in Bemidji Minnesota. Elbridge is listed as a railway laborer.  His name is spelled Albridge in some records and Elbridge in others.  His brother may be Harey or Harry.

Elbridge Kimball Lord (b. 26-Jan-1897 d. 23-Aug-1963 in Minnesota at the age of 66) and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. He was a Private in the US Army in WWI.

I am much less certain about his brother, Harry Ariston Lord, I think he was (b. 26-Sep-1899 d. Mar-1973 in Florida at the age of 73)


Another Update from Iggy:
Elbridge married an Ella B. Lord (b. February 2, 1897 d. June 1, 1987 at age 90 years in Minneapolis, Hennepin County).

"Hovey A." married Edith Lord (b. 22 Jan 1899 d. Mar 1979 in Florida), "Hovey and Edith" are in the 1930 US census twice. They were counted in Minnesota and in Washington DC.

Well, this week lets look at a category that I made up.  Children in chairs. The photos that have me saying..oh my I hope they didn’t fall.

This is Leonard and Otis, they look to be fairly close in age..perhaps a year apart. This is a Real Photo Postcard and it is from right around 1910 to 1920.  Cyko made these cards from 1904 to 1920..but this particular one was printed in 1910 and after.

Update from Abra: 
These cute children are Leonard and Otis Gunderson, the first two children of Alfred and Esther (Forcier) Gunderson. The Gundersons had a dozen children in all, if I counted correctly. Mrs John Maloney was Esther's older sister, Mary Forcier. Esther & Alfred were married 9-15-1909. Leonard was born 4-16-1910 and Otis 9-7-1911. With that information, I would guess this photo is from 1912. The Gundersons and Forciers lived in Renville and Kandiyohi counties, very close to the county I live. Leonard and Otis married women with the same last name (possibly sisters--didn't search that far). Leonard died young (1957), while Otis died in 1978. There are many living relatives, and I will look for one of Leonard's or Otis' children/grandchildren to connect. Should be pretty easy; I just need more time in a day! (BTW, Esther's sister, Mary Maloney, moved around a bit after their marriage in 1905, but were settled near the rest of the family in Kandiyohi county by 1930).

This is Homer and Frank Newcombe.  Underneath the flap of this folder the photographer is identified as Myklebust.

In the 1920 Census of Wright County, Iowa  Frank was the head of the household..Homer and his wife Silvia and his Mother Mrs. Lillian Newcombe lived with him.  He was 26 that year and was a farmer.  He was born October 03, 1893 and he died July 01, 1966.  So that would have made him about 73 when he died.
So far the birth order of these Newcombe boys is Jess (1887)  Homer (1890) and Frank (1893) and we will meet another Bro tomorrow.

Homer was my Grandfather. My mother, Leora, was his only child. I am one of his three grandchildren..& yes, he was a very handsome man. I grew up on Grama (Sylvia) & Grampa's farm with my brother,Larry. Grampa was one of 9 children...5 boys & 4 girls. I knew my uncle Frank very well as he had a neighboring farm...& he & Grampa were very close as brothers.
These pictures probably came thru Grampa's sisters families..as the brothers all lived on farms in the Eagle Grove, IA area until they passed on. I would love to hear from any of the Newcomb family.
