In 1920 the following family lived at Red Lake Falls, MN. John Lehmkuhl 61 and wife Doris 44, both born in Germany. Children; Elwin 25, Hilda 23, Elsie 21, Rosie 18, Elma 15, Esther 12, Freda 10, and Doris 5. Children all born in MN. The index at the MOMS site shows a marriage for Rose A Lehmkuhl to Carl F Ulrich in 1928 and Hilda M Lehmkuhl to John Bansness in 1933.

It is most likely a photo taken on a Confirmation Day about 1900-1910, she is holding a rolled certificate in one hand and a small book perhaps a Catechism in the other.

We do have a relatives name on the back.

Possibly related through Caroline's brothers..Louis or Hiram Burnest

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Alexandria Minnesota.

More than likely a First Communion photo.  J A Johnson was the photographer in Sauk Centre and Long Prairie Minn.  The Minnesota Historical Society says he was in business in Sauk Centre in 1902 and 1904 and there is no mention of Long Prairie…perhaps that was in 1903…but that is just a guess on my part.

The same table.  The little girl has a veil, a candle, rosary and a prayer book.  All three of the children featured in the past couple of days are in the same pose, leading me to believe that they were siblings.

This young man has a candle, rosary beads and a prayer book.  Note the same table as yesterday. 
I have heard that some churches had confirmation classes every few years so children of different ages would all be part of the same class.

The next three days of photos are possibly siblings.  I bought them all at the third Antique Shop in Dorset Minnesota. Sadly none of them are identified.

We have a veil, candle, rosary beads, and a prayer book.  Her dress has a dropped waist so perhaps this is a photo from the 1920’s.

This is Rose Gast holding a prayer book.  She wanted this photo to go to her friend Ellfrieda Hingot. edited to (Hingst)

We have some more clues Azo Postcard with triangles pointing up means 1904 to 1918.  Wahpeton N.D. is stamped on the edge of the postcard.

Well, sure enough, the rather unique name of Elfreda Hingot appears in the 1930 US census. Born in 1901 and living in Wahpeton,​ Richland county,​ North Dakota.

Nicely (and neatly) we find Rose Gast (a not so unique name) in the 1910 US census. Born in 1901, and living in Summit, Richland county, North Dakota.

Rose is the daughter of Fred and Herth Gast and she had at least 7 siblings. In the 1920 US census she is listed as Rosa (and her parents are C Fred and Hatta) and she has another sibling born since 1910.


Rose Martha Christine Gast b: 2/17/1901 d: 5/2/2000 married Alfred C. Koppelman b: 9/6/1898 d: 12/7/1983.

She had four children.

I heard from a family member that yes this is Rose,  her son thinks she was about 14 years old at the time this photo was taken, and they also think it was a Confirmation photo.    So that dates the year of the photo right around 1915. 
I am waiting to hear if they would like the photo mailed out.

This is a photo from the antique shop in Grand Forks North Dakota, it was a gift from my daughter Jen.

The photographer is someone from Hollywood Studios.  I did not find a Hollywood Studios in Minneapolis, I found them in St Paul, St Cloud and Brainerd with limited information.  I will guess that this photo is from the 1920’s or 1930’s.

The girl is holding a small prayer book and seems to have some kind of ribbon corsage on her right shoulder.  Her hair and veil are lovely.
