Full Circle 22

Recently I got an email from a gal named Jaimie. She is the Great Great Grandaughter of John Barnes and Ida Hannant Barnes.

She wrote: In case you were wondering about my family tree exactly...it goes me, my father John Beamont Barnes born in 1943, my grandfather named John Rowe Barnes born in 1912, my great grandfather John Beaumont Barnes born in 1875, and my great great grandfather John Beaumont Barnes born in 1846 (the man in your blog with his wife Ida Francis Hannant).
I explained to her that I had mailed all of “The Mystery of Aunt Fan” photos to Ruth in Texas..another relative= Full Circle  15.
I made Jaimie a copy of all of the photos on CD and mailed it to her. She was pleased.  It is really hard for me when one relative is located and then another one wants the same photos..I did suggest that she contact Ruth and see if she would part with the photos of John and Ida Barnes since Jaimie is a much closer relative than Ruth is to the Barnes Family.

Meet Fred Hickle, he is the last in this series of old photos from an Antique Shop in Grand Rapids Minnesota, and with this photo we come to the end of the Mystery of Aunt Fan. We know a little more about her and her family.   There were several other CdV’s that were marked just like these at the Antique Shop.   I have asked someone to purchase them for me, I have not heard if they were successful or not.
This is the back of Fred’s CdV.  I did find out that the Sun-Beam Gallery was in operation using this logo from 1866-1880 so we can date this photo sometime during that time.
I will mail these CdV’s off to Ruth in Texas.  She seems to be the only relative that we are going to find.  When I have heard back from her I will do a Full Circle Post.

John Alfred Hickle was born in Mclean county, Illinois on March 2, 1846 to John and Hester (Van Grundy) Hickle. The family moved to Bulter county, Iowa when "Fred" was 7y. Fred served as a member of Company G, Eigth Iowa Cavalry (1863-1865). He married Miss Annie McClintock of Dubuque, Iowa on May 15, 1870. Annie's parents were J.H. from PA and Ruth (Winchell from NY) McClintock. They had two children, Alvin D. and Florence Mabel. Florence married George Woolridge or Tripp county, South Dakota. Alfred was a staunch Republican and member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

John Beaumont Barnes (Sr.) was a member of First Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, with which he served during the Civil War (1863-1865).

This is Eddy Ryther, he is part of the Aunt Fan Collection. A suitor, a friend..we may never know.  This is a CdV and it probably is from around 1875 or thereabouts.
Eddy must have lived in Franklinville, NY.  The Bennetts were from New York too. Maybe they knew each other..maybe not.

Update : Iggy found in the 1880 census that Eddie Ryder was born in 1866..so we will change the date of this photo to 1886. 


Norkio also pointed out that it is very interesting that Fan and Ida are related to Ben Franklin and this photo was taken in Franklinville, a town named after Ben Franklin.  Thanks for the input!! :)

This is E Ulena or Eulena Bennett she is the daughter of Mary and Wallace Bennett.  She was born in October of 1879. I think she is probably about seven in this photo..so we can date this photograph about 1886.  Note how the couch is child size.  Eulena had a brother William H. he was born in 1877.

This is Wall Bennett or Wallace W. he was born in New York in 1838.  He was 17 years older than his wife Mary.  He is listed as being a Janitor.   Wall and Mary had two children, we will meet one of them tomorrow.
This CdV is much older than most of the ones in this collection..the corners have been cut. Do you think he was between 30 and 40 in this photo?  Then we can date it 1868-1878. 
Son of Great Uncle Charlie Bennett.  The photographer was Willard Carriel, Cuba, NY.

This is Mrs. Wall Bennett.  Her name is Mary A. and she was born in 1855 in Canada, England. In the 1900 Census she is living in Cuba Village, Allegany, New York. 
She is married and we will meet her husband Wall tomorrow.  I am not sure how she is related to or how she knows Aunt Fan or the Hannants, or if she ever did.  That may remain a mystery.
This is a CdV with gold around the edges and with slightly rounded corners..probably from around 1885..she would have been thirty years old then. I wondered what the story was behind the two matching bracelets, one on each arm and I marvel at how a half smile is managed wearing those corsets..

Update: Today I heard from Ruth a great granddaughter of Edna Mae ( Edna Mae was a sister to Fan and Ida). She was aware of the Ben Franklin connection. Her mother who would be a granddaughter of Edna Maes is 89 years old..she may be able to shed some light on these photographs.  When I am done with this series of eleven photos..I will mail them to Ruth.  We had a lovely visit about her family, she also has some photos that are written on with a fountain pen..it may have been the same persons handwriting. 
 The only Minnesota connection that she could think of was Curtis Hannant ( Fan, Ida and Edna Maes older brother who lived at Thief River Falls Minnesota.  :)

IF this is Alf Barnes..or Alfred Kimball Barnes he was born to Ida and John Barnes on May 10, 1881 in Ponca, Dixon, Nebraska.  He married Minnie Frickle and had two children, John Norman and Alfred Kimball Jr.   His second wife’s name was Ella Sinclair.

If he is twenty years old in this photo ..then it was taken in 1901.  It has no photographers marks. It is a CdV with rounded corners. I have some reservations about this photo..it looks much older than 1901..it looks to be very much like the photo of Aunt Fan at 17..which would place it at 1876…not 1901.  It could be that someone miss marked this photograph..it could be a young Bill Lister..??  For now we will go with it being Alf Barnes..with reservations. 

There is a Vertical File Biography of some sort on file with the Colorado Historical Society..I have emailed them for the info they have on file..I have not heard back from them.

Alfred K. Barnes began his education in the public schools of Ponca, Nebraska, but when he was seven years of age his parents removed to Norfolk, Nebraska, so that he became a pupil in the public schools of the latter place. He completed his more specifically literary course by graduation from the State University at Lincoln with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1902. He afterward pursued a two years' course in law in the State University and in 1907 was admitted to the bar, at which time he opened an office in Omaha, where he has since remained in active practice, and he is now counsel for the Peters Trust Company. He has always largely specialized in corporation law and his knowledge thereof is comprehensive and exact.
On the 1st of September, 1908, in Omaha, Mr. Barnes was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Fricke, a daughter of Herman Fricke. They now have two sons: John Herman, born February 15, 1911; and Alfred K., born July 6, 1914.
Politically Mr. Barnes has always been a stanch republican since age conferred upon him the right of franchise. Fraternally he is a chapter Mason and his religious belief is that of the Presbyterian church. He is a director of the Omaha Bar Association and his interests are of a nature that show him to be a broad-minded man of well balanced capacities and powers."

Meet John Barnes, he was married to Ida Hannant (Fans Sister).  John Beamont Barnes was born in 1846 and he died in 1921.  He and Ida had four sons, John Beamont Jr., Angusta, Guy and Alfred ( Alfred had two sons..John Norman and Alfred Jr.)
John Beamont Sr.  was a Justice in the Nebraska State Supreme Court System from 1904 to 1917.  In 1908 he was the Chief Justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court.  So he was a Lawyer, that is one wooly looking beard. 
There is no photographers mark on this CdV.  It does have rounded corners..if he was 30 years old in this photo it would be from 1876…but that is just a guess on my part.

Meet Fan’s sister Ida Hannant Barnes.   She was born in 1851, she died in 1942 in Lincoln, Nebraska.  She married John Beamont Barnes they had four sons;  John Beaumont Jr., Augusta, Guy and Alfred.
The other children I have found in the Hannant family..the parents were Robert W. Hannant and Hanna Clarissa Franklin ( a descendant of Ben Franklin) Ok the kids : George N, Tamar ( here is her Obituary) , Curtis, Norrison, Fannie, Adaline, Ida, Clara, Edna Mae and Mary.  The maternal grandfather of these children was very wealthy..he was a gold prospector and owned Lumber Mills in Iowa.
I left a phone message last night with Edna Mae’s Great Granddaughter Ruth who lives in Texas..we will see what happens. I do have her address too..thanks to Iggy..I can try that too.. I will print out this blog entry and mail it to her.
Fan Ida
The day I purchased these photos I thought that Fan and Ida might be sisters..there is a strong resemblance. There was eight years separating these girls birth.  I think that Ida is  a stunning woman..she has a real presence and her gown and that jabot and the earrings just add to her confidence.
This is the back of Ida’s photo.  From Florence’s Art Gallery Pearl Street Sioux City, Iowa. I could find no info for this gallery. All photos in this Aunt Fan Mystery series are CdV’s. I think we can safely date this CdV at about 1875, she would have been 24 years old that year.

This is Uncle Bill Lister.  His real name was more than likely William. He was born in 1859 in Iowa.   He married Fannie Hannant in 1882. They had four children.  Jason born in 1883 and died in Clay Iowa,   Agnes "Dolly" born in 1884, Edward or "Eddie" born in 1886 and died in 1960 and Florence born in 1889 who never married and died in 1940.

This is the back of the CdV, it is exactly the same as Fan’s. This photo was more than likely taken some time after 1882.  The photo is glued directly to the calling card and the card has gold edges with square corners.

William Listers parents were Joseph born in 1813 England and Mary born in 1817 in England. 
Here is a list of the children : Amelia b 1840, Barker b 1842, Morris b 1844, Joseph b 1848, Sarah b1851, Elizabeth b 1854, William b 1854 (apparently they are twins), Mary b 1856, Hannah b 1859.

Aunt Fan has a last name!  This is a CdV. Fan Lister will you give up any of the mystery that surrounds these old calling cards?
This is the back of the CdV.  J.H. Hamilton of Sioux City Iowa was the photographer. He was in business in Sioux City from 1868 to shortly after 1890.  If we knew his address, we could pin point the date..but sadly we do not have that info on the back of the card.
How old do you think Fan looks in this photo? Norkio commented that she thought yesterdays photo looked 1870 ish…from the frizzy hair. Perhaps we will find her in a census..is Lister her maiden name or her married name?

Fannie Hannant  was born in August of 1859 in Iowa..


This photo would have been taken after her marriage in 1882, she was 23 years old when she got married.
Fannie married a Mr. Lister..I do know his name..we will meet him tomorrow.
Fannie apparently had four children..that was great news for me..these photos may find their way home.
 I thought that I had a photo of her sister..now I am 100 percent positive that I do..her maiden name of Hannant was the clue I needed..tune in tomorrow to more of the Mystery of Aunt Fan!   Thanks Iggy! :)

This is what I am going to call “The Mystery of Aunt Fan.”  I purchased eleven CdV’s or Cartes-de-viste that are all marked with names.  Most of them are marked in the same hand..by the same person..we will never know who that person is, but we may learn something about the people in these images along the way.  I have several of these mysteries to share..this one is the smallest collection of photographs. I have not had time to research these names ahead of time..so we will see how it all unfolds.  I am thinking that this CdV is from the 1890’s.
This is Aunt Fan at Age 17, when I first read that..I thought she looks older than seventeen. She is beautiful.  What do you suppose the Fan was short for.. Fannie? ..do you have any other ideas? Who was she..where did she live..will she give up any history..she captivated me..I hope she captivates you too!

Fannie Hannant  was born in August of 1859 in Iowa.  If she is truly 17 in this photo then this CdV can be dated at 1876.
