Toots, Arthur with Dick Tovson  = Toots was Hazel Klomstad before she married Arthur Tovson. 

Dick was born in 1930 so this photo is probably from 1932-1933
I have had some of these people before.  I have the wedding photo of Dick and Dolly Tovson and two photographs of Toots/Hazel Klomstad's Mother and siblings.  Photos 1589 and 1565

On the back we find that Nellie Smith is John A’s wife.

Their hats are shading their faces.  I think this photo might be from 1905 to 1915.  edited to 1901 Sandstone is in Pine County.

John Congdon Smith (4 Apr 1843 - 6 Mar 1919) and Josephine (May 1843 - ?) had 

John A Smith (abt 1871), was widowed in 1910 (poor Nellie).

Erastus Smith (Nov 1873 - 7 Nov 1901) He was a law clerk at Great Western Elevator Co.; later with Minnesota Sandstone Co. Given he died at the end of 1901, the photo probably dates to shortly before that.

Edna Lamb Smith (18 Mar 1878 - 17 Oct 1964) married Levi Beckley Pease (1 Aug 1872 - 14 Feb 1969) on 30 Jun 1909. Levi was a professor in Minneapolis.

We find a possible family of Carlson's living in Lake Elizabeth, Kandiyohi, Minnesota during 1900-1910 consisting of Peter S. (Dec 1865) and his wife Hanne C (Mar 1865), both born in Sweden and a number of children, including Ellen E (1882), Agnes F (1894) and Essie E (7 Oct 1896) or (perhaps) Alice? (Dec 1895).

I think these may be from the 1950’s.

The bride wears a white gown most likely taffeta covered in a layer of lace.  The gown is an off the shoulder style.  The bride wears a veil and carries a large bouquet of flowers.  The groom wears a three piece suit with a tie and wears a boutonniere on his lapel.

I will guess that this is a photo of the brides mother and brothers.

Father Herman Wulf (b. May 1850 in Germany, Immigrated in 1868 d. 2 Aug 1931 in Renville, MN) was married to Christina Boie(?) (b. Dec 1863 in Minnesota).

They had a very large family. In the 1900 US census we find the children listed are Herman Wulf age 24, M Lena Wulf 18, Anna Wulf 15, Sophia Wulf 13, Bertha Wulf 13, Emma Wulf 11, Johnnie Wulf 8, Charles Wulf 6, Amil Wulf 4, and Robert Wulf 1. By the 1910 US census they added Raymond Wulf age 4.

This week we will look at some cute kids.  This is a Real Photo Postcard from the antique shop in Erhard Minnesota.

The postcard is from  1904 to 1918.  Their mother must have spent a lot of time making all those ringlets in their hair.  We have two styles of high button shoes in this photo.  The little girl on the left is most likely wearing a pair of leather high button shoes.  The little boy is wearing more of a Victorian style high button that is two tone black and white.

For the record..I think that is a little boy on the right and I bet he was “real easy on the eyes”as an adult.

This is a snapshot from the antique shop in Brainerd Minnesota.

This looks like a hay stack to me.   The women have long hay rakes.  The first hay rakes were made from branches, later they were hand tools similar to our garden rakes today..but wooden with wooden teeth/pegs and larger.  Hay rakes could be used to gather straw too…but this pile looks soft to me like a haystack.

When I was a little girl one year we had several hay stacks in one of our fields..we put up loose hay..and what did not make it in the barn was stacked.  I have a vague recollection of sliding down that haystack.

Three children..teenagers most likely.  Have you ever seen a chair like the one on the left? It looks like it has a very high headrest.  The photo was most likely taken in the early years of 1900..1905 to 1915. The Cyko postcards were in use from 1904 to 1920.

Agnes Fagstad (b. abt 1893-1894 in North Dakota), Sigred Fagstad (b. 1894 in North Dakota d. 1991), and Simon Fagstad (b. 23 Dec 1896 in North Dakota d. 29 Sep 1991 in Minnesota), all living in Grand Forks county, North Dakota in the 1920 US census, were the children of Ole (b. abt. 1855 in Norway) and Martha Fagstad (b. abt 1862 in Norway).

I don't know what became of Agnes.

Sigrid married George Bang and remained in Grand Forks county, ND. She had a son named George Bang, Jr.

Simon married Lillian V. Jenson whose Find-a-grave record has some interesting details such as "They farmed in Agnes Township, Grand Forks County, near Niagara, N.D. ... They lived on the farm Simon's father homesteaded, until moving to Larimore, in 1956." and a list of offspring.

Update From Rex who is a relative.
Well I've not forgoten who Simon, Sigrid and Agnes were. They are my grandfather's cousins. He lived with them after his mother died when he was about 18 months old. This photo was probably taken at their farm home near Niagara, ND. I have photos of them at an older age. Simon had three daughters and I beleive they live in Illinois.


Their parents were Ole and Martha Fagstad and the farm is still family owned and continues operation to this day. They came to this country from Norway. Ole and Martha are buried in the Elk Valley Lutheran Church cemetery along with other of their children.

They must have gathered to celebrate the baby!  Maybe that is a Grandma in the very front of the photo reaching toward the baby.

It is a wonderful old photo.  Perhaps from the late 1940’s or early 1950’s.  I wonder when those short jackets were in style?

These photos are from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes.  They are not marked.

I think this one is two daughters with their parents. 1940’s.

Then we add more people into the family mix.

A younger man with most likely his pregnant wife who isn’t real happy to be in the photo and an elderly gentleman ( who might be the older ladies brother..they look alike).  The younger man could be a brother of the two sisters..maybe..what do you see?

This is a photo from the antique shop in Fergus Falls Minnesota.

It is not marked.  I bet the young Navy Soldier is leaving for a port and his mother wanted a photo of all her children before he left.  Gosh he looks young.   I will guess that this photo was taken in the 1940’s.

Looks like someone was to Hawaii and brought back shirts and lei’s for the older boys.  The poor little girl only got a lei.

That old clothes line pole certainly needs straightening.  I am reminded in these old photos that the grass in the lawn was only cut a couple of times a year.  We used to cut our grass with one of the old whirly bladed push mowers..it was hard to push in long grass. If the grass was too long, we raked it up and threw it over the fence to the cows.

This is a Cabinet Card from the Antique Mall in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

It is very worn,  it may have been a much loved photo.  The back is a medium brown color and as you can see the front is black.  During the years 1880 to 1890 different colors were often used for the face and the back of mounts, however the simple skirts and blouses tend to make me think that this was taken right around 1900. 

I bought this photo, because I believe that it is a four generation photo.  It has some wear and I have restored it somewhat..it has some deep scratches.  Most of the time I just let the photos go thru without any restoration, when the scratches detract from the photo because they have gone over the face..I like to repair them.

There are no identifying marks on the photo, no photographers imprint and no names.
