This is a photograph from the antique shop in Brainerd Minnesota.

Long Photo Cute boy Brainerd Antiques

Anderson’s Studio in Milnor N. D. was the photographer.  His full name was Haldor (Walter) Anderson, from what I could gather he came to American from Norway in about 1870 and he lived in Minnesota a short time before moving to Milnor ND.  He apparently operated a Photo Studio for many years. I have seen these long bookmark type photos of his before.  He seemed to like them.

Sadly we have no idea who the little boy is.  Someone who lived near Milnor ND in the 1920’s or 1930’s.  The child is posed near an old ice cream parlor stool/table and he is holding some kind of toy.  He wears a suit that is sailor inspired.

The phone rang one evening and a gal asked for me.  It was Jackie in this photo.

Jackie lives in Albert Lea Minnesota now.  Iggy found an address for her, the copy of the blog was returned to me but the post office had one of those yellow tags with a new address, so I re mailed it.  A few days later the phone rang.  Jackie is a lovely lady, she will be 81 years old on May 2nd and used to live in Casper Wyoming, her son still lives there with her grandchildren.  Her son is in Law Enforcement.

About the photo:  She said that it was taken in the 1948/1949 school year when she was a Junior.  She went to high school at Freeborn and the girls were known as the “Hartland Sirens.”  She was not a cheerleader her senior year.  The other women in the photo were her friends, Jeanie lives in New Richland Minnesota, Gloria lives in Minneapolis, and the “me” is Elloyce who was a year older and just happens to be Jackie’s Aunt.  They had a quick phone conversation about this photo, Elloyce was anxious to see it.  Jackie is sure that this is her own handwriting on the back of the photo..but she doesn’t remember why she wrote + me for Elloyce.

She is a lovely lady..we had an ever so nice visit!  It is always nice to return a photo to people who truly appreciate the effort!

A group of smiling children standing in the brush.  Kind of a strange place to take a photograph..there is some kind of a line that runs through the photo.  I double checked the photo it is not a crease.

Maybe it is a telephone line?   Getting a telephone line and a telephone was a big deal!  I will guess this photo is from around 1910 – 1915.

I am not sure if they are standing near a bridge..and I wonder where the photographer was standing.  This snapshot was most likely taken in the 1920’s.  The men are wearing the newsboy caps/driving caps also called eight panel caps, the women are wearing cloche hats.

I think Nellie’s photo is from the late 1860’s to early 1870’s.  The card has square corners, the dress appears to have sleeves that are dropped a little from the shoulder and you can see her ears.  If we could see the entire dress I would guess that it has a huge skirt.

The gentleman are wearing 3 button novelty sack suits with rounded corners.  Each wear a vest although it  was commonly called a waist coat.   One wears a very formal shirt with a rounded corner collar and a tie, the other a bow tie.  Their hats were probably very similar they just wore them differently.  The hats are Derby hats or like the English prefer Bowlers..they are one and the same.

The young lady is wearing a simple white blouse that is somewhat pigeon breasted and a tie, her skirt is simple and seems to end at her ankles..it is hard to tell.

I think this photo was taken around 1910.

Tar paper shack with rifles leaning and lodge poles Dorset antiques 1

This is an interesting photo. Five rifles are leaning up against the wall, long lodge poles are leaning up against a tree, a grinding wheel is attached to another tree and the person taking the photo is standing in a cabbage patch.  There is a huge brush pile on the left.  That grinding wheel probably sharpened an ax or two.

The building is what I would call a tar paper shack.  Years ago really poor people in Minnesota would build a small house..and cover it with tar paper and boards..the boards kept the tar paper in place when the wind blew.

Nevis Mn Olaus two

From Martha:

I recently found your website called Forgotten Photos. You have a photo labeled Olaus Emil Ubøe, he was my 1st cousin, twice removed. Would it be possible to purchase the photo of Olaus Emil Ubøe from you?

From my records: Olaus Emil Ubøe was born on May 28, 1855, Aubø, Sjernarøy, Rogaland, Norway, and he died in Canada in 1926.

The following was from Milestones and Memories, Colonsay and Meacham Districts, 1905-1980,published by R.M. 342, Celebrate Saskatchewan 1980 Committees, Colonsay, Saskatchewan, Canada; printer Friesen Printers, Altona, Manitoba, Canada, 1980, p. 539.

Family Name: Uboe, Olaus and Christian

Olaus and Christian Uboe emigrated from Norway to Karlstad, Minnesota. Their education led them to become teachers. Olaus E. Uboe filed for a homestead in 1909 on S.W. 13-36-27 W2, east of Meacham. Later, Christian Martin Uboe came to Meacham and his homestead was NE 13-36-27 W2. Several years later, their sister (Emilie) came to live with them. Olaus, Christian, and their sister died here and were all buried in Minnesota.

Martha

I mailed her the photo and she has received it.  I do not charge for photos.  I return one photo to family free of charge, I consider it a kindness that perhaps they can pass along some day.  If they chose to reimburse me for postage that is great, some do and some do not.  Some people send more than the postage..then I turn around and purchase more photos.
