I received a request to try to find family for something.

Connie,

I belong to a German Interest Group in Janesville, WI. One of our members has an award (ribbon, I think.) Someone found it on the street and sent it to her. It is old and has information with it. Would it be possible for me to take a photo of it and send the photo and information to you for posting?

The surname is Scheurmann. The ribbon is in gold. There is a photo translating the German on the ribbon, one of the envelope and one giving information about the ribbon from a family member. The envelope is postmarked 1944. I don't think I can give you any more information. As I said, we are just trying to get it back to the rightful family. Do you have any other ideas?  Mary

Here it is.  First the entire ribbon, then the wording, the envelope, a note and the translation.

P1020150

P1020152

Miss Alice Scheurmann  311 Driftwood Lane Wilmette Ill  Postmarked in 1944

P1020156

There is a memo off to the side November 20, 1944-1786 =158 years old. (227 years old now)

This silk ribbon is a family heirloom from October 2, 1786 celebrating the succession of Fred. Whlm II to the throne of Prussia.

Given to Mimm Jones Scheurmann by her Aunt and Uncle Katrina and Karl Mueller who came to Ill in the 1850’s from Prussia, bringing money with them buying farm lands + becoming citizens.  They brought this rare old ribbon among their personal possessions.  Ribbon given to Karl Mueller by his father in Prussia who had been at this celebration as a young officer – 1786.

P1020159

Here is the translation of what is on the ribbon.

Huldigen – to pay homage to swear allegiance

Come (all) to your kings throne

Swear (conjur up) by the peoples sacred hands

because Friedrich turned the crown over to Friedr. Wilhelm

swear (you??) to be faithful to him

longtime your fervent heart beat for him

know (that) your  solemn oath of allegiance

will be carried by Prussia’s

protective spirit heavenwards

The book of fate (history) lies open

can prophesy you blessings

“You shall be happy for all times to come under Friedrich Wilhelm”

If anyone can help to locate family for this ribbon please leave me a comment or contact me by email, my email is off to the left click on the yellow flower in the sidebar.  I will forward the information to Mary.

Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)

I suspect this is an engagement photo. Orville Pasco Bartle (1882-1968) married Mertel Belle Hird (1889-1963) They were married March 10 of 1909.

They had at least one son, William P Bartle (1926 - 2003) and family still living in Edgeley, ND.
Update:  They had one daughter and five sons, Leroy, Kenneth, Glen, Leland and William. All four brothers died before William in 2003. William married Pearl Hirth Bartle (1926 to 2005) they had an infant son that died.

Iggy located an address for family of this photo.  I didn’t hear anything back and one day noticed a friend of mine on Facebook had a friend with the same last name.  Yes, It was her father and his sister.  A photo that she didn’t know existed.

Jan 1939 Evelyn and Len Grotness Number 1332

Photo Number1332  Evelyn and Len Grotnes 1939

Laurie wrote this about her Father and shared  a bit of family history. .

He was an avid photographer, as was his father, a Norwegian immigrant, who came to our country in 1905. My grandpa Elinas Grotnes also loved movies, and shot films of he and my father building our Valhalla Resort starting in 1929. We enjoy looking at the the history and perpetuating it. I think the photo you have was when my father Len Grotnes, and his sister Evelyn were living in Detroit Lakes, during high school. He was born in 1921, so this photo must've been in his later teen years. Back then, if someone from the Island Lake/Toad/Shell Lake area wanted to graduate from HS, they had to live in town in Detroit Lakes and return home to the lake in the country each weekend, or whenever they could make it. My. Grandpa Elinas was a Norwegian Immigrant, WW1 veteran, whom while fighting in Nantes, France, was one of the soldiers who stumbled upon 'The Lost Battalion' and helped them fight their way out. Back then, they only had carrier pigeons to deliver the statistics of their well being, and now we have FB at the touch if our fingers. Humbling! My Grandmother was a Swedish immigrant American, and was a Red Cross RN in the battlefields of Nantes, France where she met my grandfather. I love their Love story!

Laurie was pleased and thankful to get the old photo. Thank you so much! My father and his sister in the photo have been gone for five years, now. My mom had never seen this picture of daddy, so it was a special joy for her, also.

We still have no idea who took all of these photos in the Miss M series.

Update from Iggy:
Ruby Gibson (b. abt 1887 in Scotland) the daughter of Robert and Angela (Jenkins) Gibson - and if so, her sister was famous - Angela Murray Gibson. They lived in Fargo and Casselton ND.

In the newspaper article it states the Ruby was the older sister and Angela was the younger sister.  While her sister attended college Ruby worked at Herbst Clothing Store in Fargo, she had a gift for merchandising and Isaac Herbst helped her start her own store in Casselton ND called The Bee Hive Store.  She supported her sister financially with her film making efforts.  Her sister Angela was one of the first female motion picture directors.

Update from Iggy:
Ross Herbert Baumunk (1 Feb 1878 in Brazil, Clay County, Indiana - Nov. 28, 1959 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah) was the son of Jacob Baumunk and Catherine Holenburg. Find A Grave Memorial# 117778879.

He attended Indiana State Univerity (Terre Haute) around 1900-1902 so I suspect this is a graduation photo.

The 1910 US Census shows Ross working as a teacher in Faribault Ward 1, Rice, Minnesota at the Shattuck School. In 1920, he was in Ogden, Utah with his wife Pearl (b. Oct. 20, 1888 d. Oct. 20, 1963) and son Dean Burrill Baumunk (24 Jan 1919-27 Aug 2008 in San Diego, California).

His parents family history:
"On the 29th of April, 1868, he [Jacob] was married to Catherine Holenburg who was born in Owen county, Indiana, December 28, 1849, a daughter of Frederick and Minnie (Overhelm) Holenburg, natives of Hanover, Germany. The children of this union are: Laura, the wife of W. H. Evans, of Saskatchewan, Canada; Noah E., also of that place; Orlando and Minnie, of Terre Haute ; Ross H. and Nellie, twins, the latter the wife of G. F. Lever, of Sugar Ridge township; Oscar J., at home: John W., who is teaching school; and Lydia and Ruth, at home."

This is a lovely young lady, perhaps a bride.  The photo was most likely taken around 1895, because of the poufy sleeves on her gown.  Her gown has a long bow, a gathered hem, ruched sleeves trimmed in lace, an intricately draped bodice with lace.  She wears fingerless gloves, a bracelet, a pinky ring and a necklace.  Did you notice her hankie has fallen on the floor?

Real Photo postcards were popular in the early 1900’s.  Kodak was first they had a folding pocket camera that took photos postcard size and then Postcards could be ordered to be shared with friends and relatives. Later any negative could be made into a postcard. After 1907 it was all the rage to send your photo through the mail with a personal message.

This is what we know about them…from Iggy:
Roy Oliver Young Oertli (b. 30 Jul 1894 - d. 13 Dec 1958), son of Arnold and Christina Oertli, lived in Aberdeen and later in Ordway, Brown, South Dakota with his sister Edna (b. Sep 1886 d. ?) Roy and Edna appear to have never married. Rose nee' Krueger was married to Walter Oertli, and appears to have been a cousin-in-law (but I didn't find the exact linkage between Walter and Roy). Rose was Martha's sister.
In the 1920 US Census, Martha Margaret Krueger Nack (Mar. 30, 1883 - Jun. 11, 1971) is listed as a next door neighbor to Rose and Walter Oertli, living in Eldred, Cass, North Dakota.

From Iggy:
Magda (Magdalena) Oertli (c. 1816 in Switzerland), was the wife of Henry Oertli (c. 1808 in Switzerland). They were Arnold Oertli's parents (Roy's grandparents).

Walter Phillip Oertli (b. 30 Apr 1878) was the husband of Rose Krueger. His parents were Conrad (July 1843 in Switzerland) and Louise Oertli. Henry and Conrad were brothers. I'll let someone else figure out the "cousin" relationship between Walter and Roy. :)

According to the 1900 US census, Rose had 14 brothers and sisters (including Martha).
Carla and Alba were Walter and Rose's children.

Clara Frances married Otto Harry Reiger and lived in Chehalis, Washington. She had two children, one was Philip Henri Rieger (1935-2004 in Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island)

Alba Evelyn Oertli (1906-1993) lived in Cass County all her life. She married George Peter Anderson (1905-1978) and Wendell Phillip Wenzloff (1925-1998) and had a son named Reinhold Edward Wenzloff.
