Full Circle 162

Just before Christmas I was looking through a bunch of photos from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.  I was certain that they were of Moe Olson.  I had a hunch that his wife was Sis Olson…so I called their nephew.  Yes, they were his relatives.  Bruce said he would appreciate the photos so I mailed them off along with a Christmas card…even though he lives just 10 miles from me.

I mailed seven photos.  Only one had made it’s way onto the blog.

Edgewater Dec 1938 DL ant back

Dec 1938  Taken at Edgewater Beach Hotel.

I think this was taken in Detroit Lakes Minnesota because there is an Edgewater Beach Hotel there, and it sure looks like the place to me.

This is that same group we have had before.  The Marv, Perc, Ruby, Adeline, Chas, Verna, Alice, George McCarthy, Roy, Vic Ossell and Jinney group.  We now know that Perc was Percy Johnson and Addle was Adeline Johnson.   I have a stack of 25 photos that are of some of this group taken between 1937 and 1942.

I have a hunch that Chas and the gal that took most of the photos are brother and sister…or cousins. I think they were from the Detroit Lakes area, spent a fair amount of time ar Tamarac Wildlife Refuge and had friends in Princeton Minnesota.

I sure hope we can find a home for these old photos.  I have been in contact with a granddaughter of Vic Ossell so we will see what happens next.

Grand  Falls 1/11 1910
Dear Sister, This one of the postal I had taken of James Father + Mother when they were up here. I printed it to long it is too dark but you can see about how they look.
It was sent to:
Miss Clara Trogstad Lengby Minn
Thanks for stopping by.
Update from MJM:
Clara Trogstad was born May 1894 in MN to Nels Olson Trogstad and Kari Olson. Her oldest sister was Gena Trogstad, born 1888, who married James Franklyn Daugherty. If I’ve found the right family, then “James Father & Mother” would be David Daugherty and Nancy Jane Mansfield.

Update from unknown
Wow!! It isn't David Daugherty, he died in 1888 or 1889, unless the picture was taken prior to his death. More likely, it is Nancy Mansfield and her second husband, Alexander McCrae. The details line up well. Clara Trogstad was 15 on the 1910 census, which shows her family in Columbia, Polk, Minnesota. The card was addressed to Lengby. Lengby is a city in the township of Columbia, in the County of Polk. The 1910 census shows James Franklyn, Gena, and Gena's brother Albert O living in Bear River, Koochiching, Minnesota. Bear River no longer exists, but was either a railroad access for logging or a logging camp south of International Falls. Grand Falls still exists as an unincorporated community 38 miles southwest of International Falls. On the 1910 census, James is shown as a section foreman for the railroad, and Albert is shown as a laborer for the railroad. (SIde note, the Minnesota and International Railroad was extended north from Bemidji to Northome in 1903 and finally reached International Falls in 1907. In 1900, James Franklyn was 14, and living with Nancy and Alexander in Beltrami, right along the extension of the railway)

From MJM

Martha M Wheeler (1873-1955) was married to Elmer Elsworth Wood (1865-1945) and had a daughter Dorothy E Wood (1908-?). On the 1930 census, Elmer was listed as Colonel E Wood, so perhaps the name written on the postcard is the abbreviation Col.

From Iggy:
George R had a daughter named Martha...I wonder if this is the Mattie that wrote the postcard. Jennie A and Martha M were children with his first wife. May and George A with his second wife
