This real photo postcard is in pretty bad shape. However I thought it was interesting enough to purchase. I find foreign languages to be a mystery. Can anyone read this card? I had my Dad look at this car he thought it was an Overland..but I think it is foreign because the steering wheel is on the right. I like the ladies hats..do you suppose that this vehicle was a prop in the photographers studio?
Thanks for stopping by, do come again! :)
Updates:
From Crex: The postcard is sent by one of the women in the picture. She has been sick. The man is her son, I think.
From Iggy: A very rough translation would be:
Here, I send ugly ghosts of me and my boy and Marie Darb to you.

Because time always seems longer.(goes slower)
And another update November 24, 2010 !! Thanks Jo!
Marie Elisabet Darbu born 15.09.85 emigrated to New york from Christiania (Oslo) with the ship (Hellig Olav) in 1907.
home town was Fiskum.
registered as un-married.
purpose for travel was to make money.
Update: This photo is Full Circle 18 on December 27, 2010
I bet the car was a prop. It's a great photo despite the damage and I love their hats!
ReplyDeleteThe language is danish, I think. If not danish it must be norwegian, but certainly not swedish.
ReplyDeleteI can't make out the words in this handwriting - but the best I can guess is the language is Norwegian or Danish.
ReplyDelete"de var ille der ikke kam like dig rigfig goo(l?) da johan? for siden falder alf?id langer" (the best I can tell)
Neat car! :) I agree - it looks like an 1912 Overland Touring Car (built in Indianapolis Indiana), they all had steering on the right-hand side.
"Her skal jeg sende et stygt spogelse af mig og gutten min og Marie Darb u."
ReplyDelete"Wi tog deth fraa Wonderland for en tid siden. Jeg var syg i sommer saa jeg ser saa daurlig ud der, men er nu lit bedre haaber jeg faar vare frisk nu. De var ille du ikke kan like dig rigtig god da Johan? For tiden falder altid laenger."

My guess is the Wonderland mentioned here would be Wonderland Park, East Lake Street, Minneapolis (open 1905-1912)
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone..you did great with this translation! :)

Thanks Jo..great translation and information! :)
ReplyDeleteThe name was alternately spelled Darbo - and a lot of them lived in Minnesota!
ReplyDeleteIt appears she signed on as a maid with the Norton and Ada Barrows family of Ramsey, MN in 1910. There is a picture of her in Ancestry.com that I can't see since I'm not a member.
Iggy, I sent an email to Abra..we will see what happens:)
ReplyDeleteHi.
ReplyDeletePretty sure this is our family. Marie went back to Norway and married here - and her last name became Fiskum.
The language that is written is Norwegian.
Hi Janne, Please contact me by email with your address and I will mail you the postcard. Do you have a story you can share with us about Marie? My email can be found in my profile on the left side of this page. Thanks for leaving a comment:) Connie
ReplyDeleteThe story about Marie Darbo.
ReplyDeleteShe was born as a illigitimate child - and that was a big shame here in the 1880`s. It was even written in the old chuch books that she was born outside marriage. Her mother left her when she was around 2 years old - she grew up with her grand parents and their children. Her mother lived in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I think that when she went to visit - she was only introduced as family from Norway. I think that because the family found in the US did not know that they had family here.
I have been told that Marie was a very nice and sweet person with a big heart. She married my husbands grandfather and lived here in the house I am living know.
She got arthritis. Her youngest son, my father in law, nursed her at home. She died in 1963. She did have contact with the family in the US - but it was never talked about. We have many pictures from America - some of them are unknown.
Last winter I started sourching at the internet and I found anchester after her mother. So we have family in Saint Paul, Portland and California. I have not managed to find the family that are living in California. I and my youngest son was in US this summer and meet the family in Portland and Saint Paul - it was great to meet them. So know there are many who knows Marie`s story.
Wishing everbody a Merry Chrismas!
Janne, Thanks for the story about Marie! Thanks also for the Christmas wishes! I will send you the photo as a kindness if you would like it, I never charge anything for single photos. My email is in my profile with the yellow flower on the left. Merry Christmas to you too! :) Connie
ReplyDeleteThis photo is on it's way home to Norway! :)
ReplyDeleteIm so happy to see that this picture found its way home (to Norway).
ReplyDeleteIt was fun to be able find something in the norwegian archives:D
