Photo Number 1951

This is a photo from the antique shop in Wahpeton North Dakota.

Aunt Ida Hughes Wahpeton Ant

A lovely young lady with glasses, she is wearing a high necked blouse with a brooch and a necklace.  The jacket looks like velvet with many buttons, and she wears a bow in her hair.

The photographers stamp is hard to read.

  1. There is a photographer by the name of James [B.?] Bates working in Waukesha in 1870 (US Census) His wife Ellen later ran the studio along with an Albert R Cottrell, who later moved to Minneapolis(some time between 1880 and 1900).

Jerdee is possibly a "corruption" of the Norwegian Gjerde.

I didn't have time to find Ida this morning - hopefully someone can - she seems elusive to me.

  2. I found two possibilities . I think this first one is her. Ida Jerdee born about 1880 to Olaf(Ole) and Ingebor Jerdee in Wisconsin. 1905 Census shows also a sister Martha born about 1885. Ida, Martha and Ole are found in the 1910 Census, Martha is married to a George Hughes in Madison City Wisconsin.

The second possibility is Ida J. born about 1872 and married a Harry E. Hughes Kansas 1940 census.

    1. I wonder if who ever marked this photo meant Martha instead of Ida.

    2. Or perhaps the sisters married brothers?

The 1910 US Census is the one we want. :)

  3. Well, I tried Iggy's suggestion for Gjerde, but no results there...
