This is a cabinet card from N. Hassan at Glencoe, Minn. The Minnesota Historical Society Photographer Database says that he was in business from 1880 to 1881. Meet the Josiah S. Reese Family. We can see the bustle and the pleated bottom of the skirt in the older woman..the many buttons down the front and the high white collar. The littlest girl is a real cutie, and the older girl seems to have gotten tall for her skirt..her ankles are showing…her skirt has just a hint of a bustle, not enough of it is showing to be certain. Her ringlets are beautiful..I wonder if they are hers or if they were pinned into her hair?
The Ages
Josiah S Reese 41 November 9 1886
Jane Reese 33 November 12, 1886
Clara L Reese 13 January 26 1886
Abba Janett Reese 4 December 3 1886
From all this information..we will assume that Mr. N. Hassan was at his location longer than previously thought.
This is another Cabinet Card that my husband purchased for me at the antique shop in Dorset, Minnesota.
I wonder how this family is related to the Sealia and Lottie Reese from yesterday. Hutchinson and Glencoe are about thirteen miles apart.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)
Photo Update: A relative Nancy emailed me some photos..thank you!
Josiah (1845 to 1921) and Jane Reese (1853 to 1914)
And this is Josiah’s Father William Henry Reese (1817 to 1906) This photo went Full Circle 63 on November 19, 2012
I enjoyed enlarging this one to take in all the details of the hairstyles and clothing.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. I also love the ringlets.
ReplyDeleteThere is a wonderful universality about cards like this : wherever they are from - be it Europe or America or further afield - the poses, the clothes and so many of the faces seem the same. Happy New Year to you and all your readers.
ReplyDeleteHmm Reese's Pieces...
ReplyDeleteThat was an interesting way to record "birthdays". It ought to be possible to find an offspring but this was a Christmas present to you - so .... it just doesn't seem right.
:)

I imagine the picture slowly turning from washed out black and white to brilliant real life colors...and the people beginning to breathe and move. It's so awesome looking back in time...and to think it was just over...100 years ago!!
ReplyDeleteI noticed at the cemetery site Iggy listed that next in the list were twin daughters born Feb 22, 1876 and one died Feb 23 and one Feb 26. Could they have been part of this family? ..perhaps.
ReplyDeleteIn the photo the two girls pictured are nine years apart in age...nine years is quite a long time in -between children. :) Connie
From my research yesterday, I can tell you that this Josiah would be an uncle to Lottie (her father James and Josiah are brothers, sons of William). Lottie also has a brother Josiah, born in 1869. There are a few family trees, though I haven't been able to figure out direct descendants yet. Maybe I'll be able to get back to this later today. ~Abra
ReplyDeleteYet another fantastic photo and lots of information to. Excellent.
ReplyDeleteAha!!
ReplyDeleteIn the 1910 US census, Charlotta's brother Joshia is listed with his middle name... "Seal" - I've no doubt this is the sorce of the Sealia nickname used in photo 412!
Nephew Josiah Seal(ia) Reese married an Emma and in 1920 were living in Minnehaha county, South Dakota with two sons, William b. 1901 (named after his g-grandfather) and Edwin b. 1911.
Just as an aside - in the "American Poland-China record", Volume 12, Josiah S. Reese of Hutchington, Minnesota is listed numerous times as the owner of prize winning pigs, one named "Black Bess" in 1890.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful photo. I love it when they are identified rather than nothing on the back. Found you today. I love and collect old photos also
ReplyDeleteJust a comment on the older girl's skirt length - as a 13 year old girl, she was still a child and not wearing longer skirts. At a coming of age party or event, she could have been allowed to start wearing longer skirts. She looks like an "old" 13 to me, and nearly as tall as her mother.
ReplyDeleteI have found some living relatives through this chain:
ReplyDelete"Abbie Jeanette Reese" married Jesse John Reko on 4/23/1914. They had a family in (suburb of Bismark), Morton County, North Dakota consisting of at least two girls, Fern (b. 1905) and Eva (b. 1910).
Eva Reko married Henry Boulter and had a family in Mandan, North Dakota. Their daughter recently died (2009) and her obituary lists many offspring we can choose to locate.
I've a question... if there are a lot of offspring "downstream" as there are in this case - since there are a dozen children between brothers Josiah (sr) and James, who's offspring should we try to find?
Hi Iggy..I guess the first one you come to that we can locate. They will just have to share! Some will not be interested..perhaps one of them will surface..people do searches almost everyday for their relatives..pick one in ND or MN if you can.. or if any are back in Mcleod county near Glencoe or Carver county where the Cemetery was located. :)
ReplyDeleteI have the phone number of a relative in Wyoming..I will try to contact them tomorrow:) Thanks Iggy:)
ReplyDeleteGood job on identifying "Seal," Iggy! According to the Minnesota Official Marriage System, Emma Olson and Josiah S. Reese were married September 3, 1899 in Yellow Medicine County. I wonder if it is possible that the previous picture is of them and the photographer was in business longer than those two years. I wish I had some time in my schedule to run to the history museum this week to see what they have on file. I don't think they have an online searchable records base, unless they've updated recently. Hopefully a relative will be able to accurately identify the couple in the first photo. ~Abra
ReplyDeleteDead end with the phone number..I have forwarded an Ancestry Link to Abra..we will just be patient and wait and see what happens next:)
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I too love this photo. It speaks volumes to me! Also, I love how the 'father' is either too portly for his vest, or he lost a button!
ReplyDeleteOn the 1880 Census, Josiah & Jane did have two other children - Burdy Jane b abt 1878 & Charles E b abt 1879, but they're missing from the MN 1885 census and it's just Clara and "Aby." On the 1900 Census there's a daughter added - Sarah E, born Feb 1888. By the 1910 Census "Abbie" has changed her nickname to "Nettie."
ReplyDeleteLove what you're doing with the photos here! And I'm thankful to Abra for sending me the link. I'm the one with the Reeses in my family tree. I was just in Hutchinson & vicinity in Oct doing research & scanning photos from family. My 3rd gr-grandparents, James & Mary Lewis Neil, are buried at Hutchinson & I discovered that one of their daughters, Harriet Neil, was married to Coleman Andrew Reese who is Josiah's brother. Unfortunately I know nothing of Clara, Nettie or Sarah as far as marriages and family.
That is really cool! Seeing them when they got "older" is a special treat!
ReplyDeleteSo you got another "Christmas" present with these additional photos!
Nice follow up.
ReplyDeleteI've found Josiah Reese in my family tree. Not sure because the name Reese has changed so many times. I've found Reis, Reece, Rhys, Rease and so on. If you have more info on the family can you please contact me? Thanks C Reece
ReplyDeleteHello hope4reece, All I know is what information appears with this entry. I can double check to make sure. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to see the photo and interest that it has generated. I am a direct descendent of Josiah's from his son William- he was my grandfather. I have researched this line for years and happily am seeing it open up, with lovely pictures and all. We haven't been able to get farther back than William Reese born 1817 in Pennsylvania, and would love any help in that direction. my grandfather William died in 1966 and my grandmother didn't have much info for his side of the family. Not a close knit group. Thank you again for all the information you've added and for the details you provided!! I was so excited to come upon this!

Hi Diana, If you would like this photo please email; me with your address. My email is off to the left in my profile:) Connie at Forgotten Old Photos
ReplyDeleteHi Connie, Life got crazy and I am just now getting back to this mystery. I would love to have this photo, I agree with the previous post on the Josiah linking of families. It hasn't been easy because there were so many Josiahs within a few generations. My Grandfather ( Josiah 1869) went by all conceivable variations throughout his life! I am still researching the Reese name to get beyond Pennsylvania, supposedly the Reese family is from Wales, but we haven't found a link. Thank you so much for this great work you are doing!
DeleteThis photo was mailed to Diana on November 01, 2012 :)
ReplyDeleteThanks to you and your researchers we have been able to make sense of many questions when it comes to this Reese line. Thank you for following through with the idea to make these photos available to see on your blog, and if applicable TO HAVE! I am so grateful to have it amongst my family history! I've felt a connection to this family for years even though I've not been able to find much information about them, so this a a huge FIND! Also thank you to all who posted comments on your findings, your interest and skills at researching are a big help to those of us who are learning the art!! My grandfather William Seal Reese (son of Josiah Seal Reese in Old Forgotten Photo #412) died in 1966 when I was 4 years old. I feel like his family was lost to us as I don't recall ever meeting or hearing much about even one of his siblings, and his parents died before 1955. AGain, thank you for your dedication and for bringing the past back to present.
ReplyDeleteDiana, These pictures are of my Great Grandparents and my Grandma Nettie. I have a lot of info about them if you are interested. Joe Reko joereko@exede.net
ReplyDeleteJoe I sent an email to Diana with this comment! :)
