Photo Number 1762

This is a photo from Craig’s Collection.
Craigs Ira Clark Jones
Ira Clark Jones
This is more than likely a graduation photo…I will guess 1910 give or take a few years.
Craigs Ira Clark Jones studio name
Townsend Studio of Iowa City, IA was the photographer.
The young man wears one of those collars…they came in several different styles.  I believe this detachable collar’s style is called a Stanley.
Thanks for stopping by.

Update from Iggy:
I think this is Ira Clark Jones (23 Dec 1896 in Benton Township, Benton County, Iowa - 16 Dec 1978 in Concord, Contra Costa, California) Like many of Craig's photo's, the subject or their family ended up on the west coast.

Ira married Irene Frances August (5 Jan 1903 in Reading, Berks, Pennsylvania - 20 May 1948 in Contra Costa, California) and they had at least one son, Robert (c. 1926 in Pennsylvania).

I find it interesting that Ira lived in North Bergen, Hudson, New Jersey in 1930.

  1. Do you take that to be a high school or college graduation photo? After all, Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa. He could be from anywhere--though likely from the state of Iowa. Trying to find a Jones might be a daunting proposition, though. Wonder if anyone has any old yearbooks?

    1. Well, there was an Ira C. Jones who registered for the draft in 1918, who lived in Iowa City and was a student at the university. His nearest relative was listed as Paul T. Jones, who was born in Ohio--although whoever completed the form mangled the name of the Ohio city, unfortunately. But at least that's a start. The dad lived in a place called Estherville, but no state was given on that 1918 record.

    3. Apparently, he earned his Bachelor of Engineering at University of Iowa in June, 1920. Thanks to Google books, you can see that here.

    2. You are amazing, Iggy! That didn't come up for me when I searched Find A Grave. Interesting that he apparently went by his middle name, not his first name. Something to remember in further searches...
