Photo Number 344

Wall Bennett GR
This is Wall Bennett or Wallace W. he was born in New York in 1838.  He was 17 years older than his wife Mary.  He is listed as being a Janitor.   Wall and Mary had two children, we will meet one of them tomorrow.
This CdV is much older than most of the ones in this collection..the corners have been cut. Do you think he was between 30 and 40 in this photo?  Then we can date it 1868-1878.
Wall Bennett GR two Son of Great Uncle Charlie Bennett.  The photographer was Willard Carriel, Cuba, NY.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  1. He does appear to be in his thirties to me.

  2. Interestingly enough, the "Gazetteer and Business Directory Of Allegany County, N.Y. for 1875 Compiled and published by Hamilton Child" shows:

CARRIEL, WILLARD photographer, Main Street, corner Canal, Cuba, NY.

And a few entries above him is:

Barnes, J. M., furniture. Main Street, Cuba, NY.

According to the 1870 census, J M Barnes was born about 1832 and appears to have remarried as there are some "Pilford" offspring living with him. Perhaps this is the "missing link"?

  3. I wonder how long the negs were preserved. What a find that would be.

  4. You are finding photos that are coming farther away for Minnesota. It is a classic.

  6. Thank you for posting this! Wallace was my 4th-great uncle (I am related through Catherine Bennett, his sister, who married Herbert Hillman, my great-great grandfather). I had seen a photo of him as an older man and I actually have a copy of this photo, also from Willard Carriel, as well as a portrait photo of Mary Jackson. I didn't know if it was Mary or not until I saw your Photo Number 343. I just now discovered your website - are we related? I'll probably spend the next few hours going through all your wonderful photos - thank you so much for sharing these! I've never seen a photo of their daughter so I look forward to exploring your site. Feel free to email me at troy.a.hillman@gmail.com if you'd like to chat!
