  1. Sad story - this photo is in FindAGrave tells a woeful story.

John Merrill Baitsell - Born in Mahaska, Iowa, USA on 4 Jul 1889 to John Albert Baitsell and Amanda Clammer. He passed away on 21 Apr 1905.

    1. John J and his brother Charles Weaver Packwood were photographers in the Mahaska, Iowa area in 1900.

  2. John's brother, Karl Merrill Baitsell had a family. Karl himself was a mailman in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Karl's son Roger E. is Find A Grave Memorial# 122251512. I do not know if he had a family. He served in WWII.

  3. You have a good possibility to find a family member for this one. The name is so different that any family member doing a search would zero in on it.

  4. Ah...when you mentioned the shadows in the photo, I wondered if the boy had died. Wonder if this photo was created for a memorial.

Tuberculosis was such a huge threat in bygone years. We hardly even think about it nowadays, but it was devastating in past eras.
