Update from Jacqi:
Henry and Annie are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Thoreson. As Iggy mentioned, there is a marriage record on Ancestry indicating the marriage, in Fillmore MN, of a Francis E. Phipps, Jr., and Anne Thoreson on November 18, 1899--almost exactly 116 years ago. I found this couple in the 1910 and 1920 census--in 1910, living with Francis' father, also a Francis Phipps. I didn't see any indication of children in either census record.
The MN state census from 1895 shows a Christian and Oleana Thoreson in Fillmore County, with children Henry, age 19, and Anne, age 21.
Christian appears to be Find A Grave Memorial# 65287625. His wife Anna is Find A Grave Memorial# 65287749 - her memorial includes a photo of her (when she was much older).
ReplyDeleteI found this: Francis E Phipps Jr married Anne Thoreson on 18 Nov 1899 in Fillmore, Minnesota.
ReplyDeleteI suspect that explains the "strikeout" through "Frances" on the photo.
"FRANCIS E. PHIPPS, a native of New Hampshire, was born on the 14th of April, 1833. When young he learned engineering, and in 1854, came to Green Lake county, Wisconsin, where he was engaged in running stationary engines in a steam mill. In 1860, he came to Minnesota and took a claim in this place, sections ten and fifteen, where he has since lived. He was married in 1862, to Miss Mary Samson, a native of Canada. After a lingering illness of several years Mrs. Phipps died in 1881, leaving three children. Mr. Phipps has taken an active part in the support and organization of the schools and has held several local offices."

DeletePossibly this Henry and Anna are Parents or an uncle and auntie.
DeleteI am wondering whether the light (pencil?) writing explains, "My aunt's family." I've seen a number of old family photos where an elderly relative is desperately trying to capture all her memories of the identities of each person in the photo--and explain the relationships as well, all at once. It sometimes comes out as a jumble of information.

Perhaps the niece or nephew who labeled the photo may have been descendant of Henry? Or another sibling?
The MN state census from 1895 shows a Christian and Oleana Thoreson in Fillmore County, with children Henry, age 19, and Anne, age 21, along with another 18 year old whose name begins with either T or F--I couldn't read the handwriting. In addition, the household included Thoreson-surnamed people named Olive and Eddy. There was also another 45 year old Thoreson whose name I couldn't read. Since the state census doesn't include descriptions of relationships, who knows who all those people could have been.
Actually, on second thought, the census record may include Henry's wife and children, rather than other siblings.
