Photo Number 166

This dress looks hot and heavy..I thought that the velvet front piece was interesting.   I also like the wicker chair and the garden setting in the background, however the dress seems out of place in this setting.  I will date this photo 1895 to 1900.
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  1. That dress sure doesn't do much for the figure. At least it doesn't do much for hers. It looks miserable and all that poofiness in the sleeves would drive me insane. Now I realize why the women of that era did not have long life spans. It was the clothing they were forced to wear. I would die too without jeans and a comfy T-shirt.

  2. I like the arm pieces. It looks like she is ready for battle. I assume her hair is pulled back into a bun, but it is not a dress that works.

  4. I wonder if she's pregnant and carrying late and low? Poor woman. That dress looks so restrictive. The sleeves alone make my elbows ache.

  5. Thinking about what Kelly wondered as far as pregnancy, if that is the case, perhaps that is the reason for the odd velvet addition to the dress; it doesn't seem to add anything in the way of style. Perhaps it was added to cover up an expansion of a dress that was repurposed for maternity wear. I have to say, I have not seen many pregnant women in old photos. I wonder if the practice was uncommon, or if pregnancies were "hidden" in photos? It is interesting to speculate!

  6. Argh! This is my fourth attempt. I am so irritated with Blogger. If this goes through I will post the whole long comment separately.

  7. Okay, since that went through, lol...As I was saying. I don't think she is pregnant because pregnancy was a visible reminder that sex actually took place. The staid Victorians were not comfortable with sex and being photographed pregnant would have been unspeakable. Tantamount to pornography. Anyway, I think this lady has poor posture, possibly from scoliosis or even polio, two diseases we are fully capable of dealing with today. Her posture is not accented in any way by this awful dress. It is possible a different front was on the dress which was ruined in some way and then replaced with the velvet panel. Hopefully she thought she looked great, and did in fact look great compared with how she normally looked.
