I wonder if this fella died in 1884? Or is that when the photo was taken?
Notice that the face and the back of the cabinet card are different colors, this was a trend from 1880 to 1890.
Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)
Update from Iggy:
From a Toronto Directory

"Cunningham Mary J (wid John G), h 105 Garden av •. from 35 Wright av"

It also lists a James Cunningham.

  1. Bright and shiny looking dude. I've no access to Canadian records - if he died in 1884, he was only 19.

    1. I was wondering how you found those details written above without access to Canadian records...but then I realized you have other options...

I do have access to Canadian records, but in a cursory glance, didn't find John in Toronto in the 1871 or 1881 census, though there is a James. I also found a Mary, but not likely our candidate. I'll have to revisit this later and see if more comes up.

While it didn't help in this case, there are several Canadian census records available for free at the website called Automated Genealogy for those who might be interested.

  2. The photographer is J. Fraser Bryce and his studio was located on 107 King Street West, in Toronto, Canada. Bryce was born in 1852 in Dundas, Ontario. In 1884, Bryce located permanently in Toronto buying Thomas Hunter’s studio. Bryce is cited in the American Annuals of Photography (1887) as a member of the executive committee of the Photographic Association of Canada.

  3. http://static.torontopubliclibrary.ca/da/pdfs/tcd1893.pdf is the 1893 Toronto City directory -

"Cunningham Mary J (wid John G), h 105 Garden av •. from 35 Wright av"

It also lists a James Cunningham.
