Update from Iggy:
This is the most likely...
Ellen A. Vercoe (1850 - 1930) buried in California  She and her husband John lived in Chicago in the 1910 US Census. John Vercoe (1847 -1936)  Both Ellen and John are buried in San Gabriel Cemetery in Los Angeles County California.

They had a son named William John Vercoe born 11 Aug 1878 and died on 19 Mar 1929 at the age of 40. He was married and had a step-daughter named Irene Kennedy (b. abt 1902).

  1. I found a source that claims J K Stevens worked at this location from ca. 1885-1887 and another one that shows his successor was there in 1905. So the years he worked there are a little cloudy.

There are two candidates for this woman, the strongest one is -

Elllen A. Vercoe (1850 - 1930) found buried in California (were a lot of Craig's photos or families seem to "end up"). She is Find A Grave Memorial# 120148220. She and her husband John lived in Chicago in the 1910 US Census.

The other, Ellen Stride nee' Vercoe (15 Jun 1851 England - 15 Jan 1911 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois). She is in the Forest Home Cemetery.

I'm reasonably certain the first one is the "right" one.

  2. While this is a great photograph, I'm sure you'll understand why the back of the photograph holds more interest to me than the front. How coincidental to see a photographer named J. K. Stevens in Chicago at nearly the same time as my John Kelly Stevens family! I'll bet every time they passed by the McVickers Theatre Building, they had to smile...
