  1. In the 1900 US census, we find Peter F Ross, living in Tipton, Missourri listed as a photographer. This fits the cropped off words on the photograph and the time frame (c. 1899).

So, looking in Tipton, Moniteau, Missouri, we find a Thomas Calhoun born on June 8, 1808 in Ireland (and not 1909) who died December 20, 1899 at the age of 91.

His FindAGrave memorial lists his wife and one of his daughters (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=89644550)

I'm not sure this is the "right one" - given that there are a half dozen Thomas Calhoun's in the 1880 US census born in 1808-1810 - but I think it unlikely that there was another one in a place as remote as Tipton, MO in c. 1900.

    1. I don't know how "remote" Tipton Missouri might have been at that time, but all the other details seem to fit! Even the photographer :)

    2. Tipton (population 3,262 at the 2010 census) is about the geographic center of Missouri, and about 150 miles from the nearest city of any size.

I probably could have used a better word than "remote". :) Showing my city slickerhood.
