Minnie Haarstad  daughter of John Haarstad
Such fat little feet!
Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again.
I found a Minnie P. Haarstad born May 17 1892 and died April 9 1909.  She is buried in Norway Lutheran Cemetery Traill County Mayville North Dakota.  She was sixteen years old when she died.
I found a John Haarstad at the same cemetery  Born July 30 1855 died 1929
Pauline Haarstad June 26 1863 – July 12 1913
There are two other girls in the same cemetery:
Clara O. Haarstad Feb 22 1881 – July 30 1898 Age 17 years old
Olga L. Haarstad July 4 1882 – March 16 1899 Age 16 years old
Does anyone else find it odd that three girls perhaps all daughter of John and Pauline would die at about the same age?

Update from Iggy:
Census 1900
John Haarstad 44
Pauline Haarstad 36
Josy Haarstad 10
Minnie Haarstad 8
Louise Pederson 23 (boarder)
Nellie Pederson 23 (boarder)
Mabel Hanson 12 (another Hanson!)

"Josy" Josine married Hilbert Oliver Lee (26 May 1890 - 2 May 1964) and moved to Los Angeles, California.

This Photo is part of Full Circle 91.

  1. That is odd, Farside - perhaps a disease related to puberty? The 1900 US Census shows the family as:

    John Haarstad 44
    Pauline Haarstad 36
    Josy Haarstad 10
    Minnie Haarstad 8
    Louise Pederson 23 (boarder)
    Nellie Pederson 23 (boarder)
    Mabel Hanson 12 (another Hanson!)

  2. Hard to say why they would all die at about the same age. There was a lot that wasn't known, medically, at that point. They may have had a hidden health problem that develops to a serious point by late teens or early twenties that they were all afflicted with. Or maybe...just diseases took their toll, coincidentally at that same age. I know the Spanish flu didn't hit at this time period, but wasn't it an example of a flu that hit younger folks somewhat harder than older ones? Perhaps it was something like that.

Since two of them died just before the turn of the century, it reminds me of one of my Tully descendant families for which such a tragedy struck. The extended family was living in the Dakota Territory, and at least three of them died, just before 1900. Makes you wonder what kind of epidemics might have been brewing at the time...

  4. I wonder if this Pauline Haarstad could possibly be Pauline Simensdatter Ensby born 1852 in Norway. She is the youngest sister of my great great grandmother Berti and also sisters of Ronnoug and Anna Simensdatter Ensby- pictures of whom you sent me several months ago. I can't seem to find records of John Haarstad to confirm anything. Hoping someone might have more information. Thanks!
