Photo Number 861

This week we will look at some photos of men, some have names and some do not. This is a CdV from the first Antique Shop in Dorset Minnesota.

A young man..perhaps 14 or 15 years old.

Rev. ??  W. B. Dahl
I was unable to find anything out about the photographer J. G. Grossfield.

I suspect that the photo was taken sometime in the 1880’s.  Pink was a common card color used during the 1880’s and later.

I am back at work this week.  I will update info either early in the morning or in the evening.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Anonymous:
Wilhelm Bull Dahl "Born in Gården Sentvet, Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway on 23 Aug 1864 to Ole Halvorsen Dahl and Johanna Wilhelmsdtr Bull. Wilhelm Bull married Ellen Eriksdtr Heien and had 10 children. He passed away on 8 Feb 1932 in Dwight, Richland, North Dakota, USA."

Trøgstad is south-east of Oslo, close to the Swedish border.

Wilhelm B. Dahl left Norway April 29 (!) 1870, together with parents Ole Halvorsen Dahl (Carpenter) and Johanne Wilhelmsdatter, children Augusta (7), Wilhelm (5) and Torvald.

In 1880 they live in New Prairie, Hope, Minnesota. Additional siblings Tilda, Johny and Hilmar.

He most likely was the Pastor at St John's Lutheran Church rural Richland County North Dakota. from 1912 to 1916.

Update from Iggy:
Wilhelm, born in Norway, and Ellen Dahl are shown living in Sparta, MN in 1900. The US census of that date shows his occupation as Clergy, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9S9-DKJ

I think Anonymous has the right man. I'm not sure how/why the photo from Coon Prairie, Wisconsin... However Coon Praire is one of the earliest and most famous Norwegian settlements in the Midwest.

Rev. W. B. Dahl 1864 to 1932 is buried in Faith Lutheran Cemetery Richland County ND.  Ellen Dahl 1866-1940 is also buried there.  Faith Lutheran Cemetery was formerly known as the Dwight Cemetery.

  1. There are several google hits that points to W. B. Dahl (1864-1932) being a minister in Richland, ND, around 1912-1916.

    Grave, and service.

Could it be William B. Dahl, married to Elen L. Dahl?

  3. Wilhelm!

Wilhelm Bull Dahl: Pictures, relatives, etc. can be found at here. Apparantly, Wilhelm is named after his mother's father.

  4. With ten child, and many of them boys, there has to be some living Dahl offspring. I suspect this photo came way of son Arthur Wilhelm Dahl (1893 - 1979) who was born in Clinton, Minnesota, USA on 8 Sep 1893. He passed away on 5 Apr 1979 in Detroit Lakes, Becker, Minnesota, USA.

  5. Tried to find something on your photographer. That Grossfield character is a difficult fella to track! I found a Gabriel G. Grossfield, photographer, born Norway circa working in Rushford, Minnesota in the mid-1880s. He was in Lanesboro, Minn. prior to that. But "J. G. Grossfield" came up empty for me. G.G. came to the US in 1871 so maybe he went by a different name early on. It's a stumper!
