Photo Number 859

This is a photo from the antique shop in Park Rapids.

Two children PR Raven Studio Wadena

This photo is in a folder.  The photographer was Raven from Wadena Minnesota.  He was a photographer there off and on from 1912 to 1922.

The little guy on the left might be a boy, his hair is parted on the side.  The other child..who knows.. it could be either a boy or a girl.

I am curious about the bar pin that both are wearing.  I have seen it in photographs before, do you know anything about its origin or significance?

Children had to hold very still for the photographer..you can see one fuzzy foot on the toddler!

Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)

  1. It's amazing the whole photo doesn't turn out fuzzy for children's pictures!

  2. I think they're both boys. They just have that boy look (ha I'm probably wrong!). Now I'm curious about the bar pins. Hopefully someone will have an answer.

  3. I think they are both boys too. The little girl portraits often have ribbons or flowers in their hair. I'll see if I can find some of those little bars amoung my collection.

  4. I think they are both boys too. I searched the internet for the origin of the bar pins but nothing came up. (I want to pick up the babies)

  5. I vote both boys, too.

I know dresses were the attire back then for little boys, but don't think I've ever questioned why. Do you know? Easier for changing diapers? Why white?

    1. Hi Anita, Yes easier for changing diapers because clothing only had buttons for fasteners. Most boys were kept in dresses until they were potty trained. Not sure on the white..it was most likely the most available fabric color:)

  6. I have a little silver brooch engraved with "Baby" which must have been a gift sometime between my birth and my Christening (in 1964) - but perhaps that's a Scottish tradition, which has pretty much died out. I think they're both boys, too.

  7. If you google "Victorian Bar Pin" (and select images) you will see a whole gamut of these sort of pins. I guess they were the "hot fashion" of the day.

I'm with most of the rest - they look like to boys to me.

  8. Babies were dressed in white because it could be boiled and bleached with no damage to colors. As the child got older, they were often given muted patterns in earthy colors.
