Photo Number 846

This is a little photo from The Tin Ceiling in Park Rapids Minnesota.

It is in a rather strange holder.

Pull out this tray.  Then pull out the mantle by taking hold of the wire? support.  Don’t let the mantle touch the box.  Form No. 5013

I am not sure if a mantle was a candle or what??  Any ideas?

Perhaps the little boy didn’t want his suspender overhauls to show.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  3. The mantle box was recycled. The mantle is the white fabric bit that goes into gas lamps (like Colman lanterns).

    Such a cute lil' guy!

  4. As Intense Guy says, mantles were used on gas lamps. The occupation of "mantle maker" was quite common for women in Scotland then, as the flames from the lamps burned the mantle so they had to be replaced often.
