Photo Number 836

This week for the week preceding Easter we will look at some religious photo.  Most of which I believe are Confirmation or First Communion photos.  This first photo is from the Antique Shop in Grand Forks North Dakota, my daughter Jen gave me this old photo.
Boy Religious from Jen Grand Forks Antiques
The photographer was Fred Lhotka of Winsted Minn.  I did not have any luck finding any info about this photographer.

I will guess that this photo was taken in the late 1920’s  or 1930’s.  late teen's or early 1920's.  The young man is holding a candle, a prayer book and a rosary and he has a corsage of Lily of the Valley.   He is wearing a fine double breasted suit which fits him perfectly.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Iggy:
Fred Lhotka was born in Rich Valley Township, Minnesota on May 28, 1881. He worked in Wistad from 1902 to 1922. He also went by Lehika and Lholka. An unusual name in any case. The family was from Tabor, Bohemia (Southwestern Czechoslovakia).

  5. Lhotka is definitely correct--a name I know well, not unusual in this area! Rich Valley township borders the town I reside in, so basically, Fred was a country boy from the town I live, and I will guess he probably went to church as a boy, right across the street from my house (the Bohemian Catholic Church--we used to have two-the other Polish, but both parishes combined now). Winsted is about 12 miles from here. Fred is still listed as a photographer in Winsted in the 1930 census, so this photo could be from a later era. I believe Fred died in 1949.

My guess is the young boy attended one of the area Catholic Churches--probably Winsted, or perhaps even Silver Lake. I will put this image up on my Facebook and ask friends if they can send people over for a look. I am hoping to be able to track down someone who knows this person--he may be someone's grandpa or great grandpa or uncle in this area. ~Abra

  6. Love this networking thing you have going on here, Far Side! When I saw Iggy's comment about the name, I thought such an unusual name would be easy to find...until I saw Abra's post. Well, here's hoping stage two on Facebook does the trick. Imagine finding someone in your own town related to one of these pics!
