Photo Number 304

This is a Real Photo Postcard, it is an Azo with four triangles pointing up..so it is from 1904 to 1918.

It is addressed to Miss Myrtle Hooke ( Haake or Hoake) 509 NE Oak Street Brainerd, Minn..I wonder if she ever got this postcard..perhaps she is in the photo..we will probably never know.  I searched in Minnesota for her and came up empty handed.
Now what do you suppose this occasion was..Confirmation?  A class at a small school?  This photo does not say “family” to me..does it to you?

Iggy also had a question about Real Photo Postcards, about why an unknown event would inspire a postcard??? ..here is my answer. 
In 1902 Kodak made the paper to print a negative onto a postcard..you could order as many as you wanted..to mail to friends. Traveling photographers would do the post cards too..but usually of towns and special events. In 1903 a special camera that used postcard size film enabled everyone that could afford the camera the ability to make any photo they took into a postcard!


Update: September 08, 2010:  I received a name and address from Iggy and I have sent off a copy of the postcard and an inquiry to an individual who may be Myrtles son..we will see what we hear:)

This is a real photo postcard from 1904 to 1918.  It may have been a Labor Day Photo..the grass and weeds are tall enough.  They are quite a threesome..enjoying a day at the lake!

This photo was taken in 1916, unfortunately the photographers name is so hard to read I cannot venture a guess.  I chose this photo because I liked the way the little boy has his hand around his Mother.  The Mothers dress is fur trimmed..I am not sure what kind of fur it is.  A beautiful family photo, I looked closely at the Dads ring and the boys locket, they appear to be different.

This is a Real Photo Postcard from 1904 to 1918.  It was intended for Edna F.

Edna, I have no special grudge against you even if I do act like it by sending you this card. But really I haven’t and will try to write later. When I do write I’ll make my letter worthwhile.  With Love ERS

Full Circle Ten

Photo Number 288

This photo was mailed a few weeks ago to Carol T. these are relatives of her husbands, either his Grandparents or Great Uncle and Aunt.  She said she would probably not know the difference.  Her daughter was interested in genealogy..so the photo was being sent to her. 

I have no wonderful stories to share, Carol did say that if the lady in the photo was Mabel, that she was a lovely lady and she lived in Hubbard, Minnesota all her life.

Full Circle Nine

Oh, I love sending photos off in the mail and hearing stories about the people in the photos!  I sent off six photos..the ones I called Mothers Bros.  I got these photos at an Antique Shop near Dorset, Minnesota.

I mailed the photos to Monroe’s daughter Nina. I received these emails from her along with a story!

Hi Connie, 
          
I did receive your e-mail.  I'm late in getting back to you because  I've been doing some investigating into our family history.  Our family would love to  have the pictures. I called my sister this morning to ask if Grandpa Newcomb had a sister and if she  lived in Minn.  She remembers visiting a lady in Alexander, Minn, when she was quite young 
(1940's). We're not sure if she was a sister.
 
Grandpa came from strict Victorian family.  My sister has a wedding picture of Monroe (his father and mother) . 

Ed and Edna had four children Monroe, Norma, twins  Donald and Dorothy.  He farmed with his sons south west of Eagle Grove, Iowa.  He had a great work ethic and we learned it well as we grew up on the farm.  One story I love to tell
that involved my dad and grandfather happened in the early '50's.  Homer and Sylvia  grandchildren, Larry and Joan Mehl,
we visiting for the summer.  They lived only a quarter mile from  us.  It had been a rainy spring and the creek near-by was over it's banks.  There was a rope bridge and guess what?  We decided to check it out.

My dad and grandpa were putting up fence and saw us with the help of  a younger cousin, who was not invited.  Grandpa thought my dad should check it out.  We  reached the bridge and the water was running and was quite high.  The older kids went to cross, but we younger ones stayed away.  It was probably a good idea because we saw dad standing behind a tree with a willow switch in his hand.  We could see we were in trouble so we headed for the house.  My sister, Linda was short and could not run as fast, so guess who felt the switch
the most.  What did we learn?
 
We learned to ask and to let someone know where we were off to.  We had to eat dinner with our younger cousin and if looks could kill.  Ha.
 
We have many stories.  Thank you so much for sending the pictures.

Hi Connie,  I received the photos today.  Thank you so much.  I have shared the story of you
finding these photos with many of my friends and relatives.  They have found the story pretty
amazing.  My husband, Tom, will scan these and share them with family.  There was another
brother George who was a policeman in Eagle Grove.  I'm still finding out who else was in the

This is a cute little girl, HM Olson took this photo in Frazee Minnesota. I could be related to this young gal as I have many relatives over by Frazee..but this is an unmarked photo..so we will never know.  The photographer was only in the area in the year 1902..so that is the date we will use for this photo.
