    2. There is an Aanon Kittilsen born at Flaat in Evje in 1863 (Norwegian Census), and Aanon Kittilsen Flaat who traveled to Norway in 1920. There is an Aanon K. Flaat, born 1863, arriving in US in 1898. He may have traveled back and forth a bit.

(This may be another guy. Aanund and Aanon are different forms of the same name, but Aamund is somewhat different...)

  3. It would be interesting to know what the occasion might have been for these men to be photographed together. Related? Business associates? Or?

    1. If I'm allowed to speculate:

Aamund was born in Evje, Setesdal, Norway, and settled in Bentru Township, ND. This is just south of Walle Township, ND, where Ben settled.

If we take a leap of faith, and accept that Betty is Ben's daughter, then Ben came from Bygland, also in Setesdal, Norway. So they may be connected by both coming from the same valley in Norway (and neighbors in US).

(This area is strongly connected to Setesdal in Norway. Just across the border to Minnesota, there is Bygland township. Walle township may be named after Valle, also in Setesdal. Setesdal is a small valley, in terms of people living there.)

But Betty's obituary says she was born in Effie, MN, in 1911, while the census placed the family in Walle in 1910. However, the 1910 census says Ben had a son Knut, born in 1910, and I find a Knut Knutson in Effie in the 1920 census, who is born in ND in 1910 and has a sister named Berget (Betty was baptized Birgit, according to the obituary). If this is correct, Ben must have died before 1920.

  4. First thing that had popped into my head was Amund (since I used to know some Amundsons)...but the double A threw me off, and it didn't really look like an "n-d" ending. Iggy, MJM and Lars are amazing. I guess I'm just a tad bit too literal...

That cemetery has a number of Flaats buried there...some appear to be burials of descendants down to the last few years. If they are related to Aamund (and we can find some obituaries for them), that might be one way to trace a living relative who might want the photograph. I remember seeing a Kittel mentioned.

  5. Hi Folks - I stumbled across this page by accident during a web search and am glad I did! I am related to the Aanund Flaat pictured here. MJM and LarsI are correct about his identity and emigration from Evje in Norway to Bygland, MN. I am not sure about the connection with the Knutsons - I am not aware of a family connection but maybe there was a business connection or they were just friends.

I am in contact with a descendant of Aanund Flaat who may be interested in the physical photograph. Feel free to contact me at cflaat (at) msn (dot) com and I can connect.

Question: were there other unidentified pictures in the same box this picture came from? If so I may be able to help identify other pictures.

    Thanks!
    Chris Flaat
