There is a likely possibility that this is Jimmie
James, born 1914 in North Dakota to George H. and Erma (Irma). If so his father died in 1917 and his mother in 1937..both are buried in Inkster, Grand Forks County, North Dakota.Grand Forks ND.

This is a CdV from the third Antique Shop in Dorset Minnesota. 

We know nothing about this gentleman.  I bought the photo because I liked his fat tie. I also noted that just the top button on his coat was fastened.  So now I can place that along with the fat tie and stand up collar in the early 1880’s.  This CdV also has rounded corners which points to the 1880’s and later.

W. E. Nelson was a photo artist in Lake City, Minnesota from 1882 to 1883.

Sometimes I run onto a photo where someone has been cut out of the photo, or photos that are are cut into strange shapes. I found this one at the Antique Shop in Duluth Minnesota.

Was someone else in this photo?  What kind of frame would fit this photo?  Sadly we may never know as the photo is unmarked.

Photo Number 865

This is a CdV from the antique shop in Brainerd Minnesota.

On the reverse it is marked “My Dad.”  The card stock is very thin and it has square corners.  I believe it may be from the late 1860’s.  The cards they used were thinner back then and often the photo was framed in an oval surrounded by vines or ornamentation.

I wonder if the gentleman's vest was left open for a reason..was his arm tucked in there when he walked?  I also wonder about the light colored trim on his jacket with stripes near the wrist area of the jacket.

This is a CdV from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

A young man with his hat in hand.  I will guess that this was taken in the late 1870’s to early 1880’s.  Buttoning just the top button of your suit coat was very popular during those years.  The card also has rounded corners and is trimmed in gold.

The photo was taken by Ellis Ayres in Dodge Center Minnesota he was a photographer there from 1880 to 1890. So I will adjust my guess to the early 1880’s for this photo.

Today we have a Cabinet Card from the Antique Shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

This gentleman is resplendent in his double breasted overcoat, gloves, cane and his beaver top hat.  Not to mention the flower in his lapel.

Update From Tolley Family Historian
Dorrett and Martin were only at 60 West Strand for a brief period after establishing their partnership in 1899. Dorrett was widely recognized in London as one of the best technical photographers of his day.

Johan B. Dahl  perhaps a brother of the young man yesterday.
Yes they are brothers. In the 1880 census Johny is listed.

Johanes Halvorsen Dahl 

"Born in St Paul, Minnesota, USA on 23 Jun 1871 to Ole Halvorsen Dahl and Johanna Wilhelmsdtr Bull. He passed away on 1949 in Fargo, Cass, North Dakota, USA."


Wilhelm B. Dahl left Norway April 29 (!) 1870, together with parents Ole Halvorsen Dahl (Carpenter) and Johanne Wilhelmsdatter, children Augusta (7), Wilhelm (5) and Torvald. 

In 1880 they live in New Prairie, Hope, Minnesota. Additional siblings Tilda, Johny and Hilmar.
