Photo Number 418

On to a few interesting photos from the Antique Shop in Park Rapids that is owned by Linda.  I have known her forever.. she and I went to school together beginning in the first grade…a long time ago.   Sports Team PR Antiques

This is an unmarked photo..obviously a team of some sort.   I figured I was curious enough to spend 50 cents for it. These men all have quilted shorts on..were they wrestlers?  I don’t know..any ideas are welcome! There is some kind of huge backdrop behind them.  The photo will enlarge if you click on it.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  1. I don't think there are enough "players" for a high school or college wrestling team in the picture. I think this is a basket ball team. I notice the shoes are really scuffed up though.

I found another picture that is very similar (click the link) PA Duryea 1920-1921 Basketball Team

  2. I'm not sure what sport this could be, but there is something about this photo that makes me laugh. The guys in the middle look a little roughed up, especially the one on the left (with the tears in the shirt). BUT, the two guys on the end are wearing tuxes. I'm wondering less about the uniforms and more about why would these guys need tuxes. The one on the far left looks extremely uncomfortable in his, and it looks borrowed, judging by the length of the pant hem. Either way, it is a real interesting photo.

  4. very interesting about the tuxes. Maybe they aren't the coaches..but other important people that visited the game?

  5. I think this is a wrestling team. Teams can be any size because it is an individual sport and a school doesn't need a complete team to compete. However, photo was probably at a regional/state event and those pictured were the only ones to qualify for the contest.

I've never seen photos with quilted shorts before, so that element is intriguing. Great photo, Connie.

  6. I look at this picture and I just don't see wrestlers so I went looking for other clues. I found a site with 1910 Basketball uniforms that included quilted shorts so I'm going with that guess. http://www.antiqueathlete.com/vintage-basketball-uniforms.shtml

  7. I think the well dressed gent on the far right is probably the team coach. They mostly dressed in suit and tie back in 1910-1930s. I found another picture that looks like similar shirts -

The third picture from the top labelled "1921-1922 YMCA Men's Basketball Team - The Yellow Jackets" on http://www.rison-dallas.com/sports.html

I'm thinking this picture is a YMCA team in the 1920's. The rope in behind the gent on the far right reminds me of the ones we had in Gym class. I wonder if the old gymnausiums were chilly?

  10. Remember that the bowtie was a very common type of necktie for gentlemen until pretty recently. Many old photos I have seen feature a bowtie. That being said, I don't think they are wearing tuxedos. I think they are just wearing suits. My basketball coach wore a suit for all our games.
