This photo of Mother and Child was also taken in Watkins Minnesota by R. H. Stewart in 1902. I wonder if the woman from yesterday knew this woman that is featured today? This one is not marked.

The photographer was R. H. Stewart of Watkins Minnesota. He was in business in Watkins for only one year 1902.

This is Stephen with me.

The blouse that Agnes is wearing has dark lace on the cuffs, down the sleeves and down the front, and is accented by a dark tie. She appears to be wearing a skirt and a blouse. Baby Stephen is wearing a dress..very proper for a baby boy in 1902.

Agnes Brown is found with her husband David and sons George born in 1897 and James born in 1900. They are all living with her parents George and Lavinia Mc Kenzie in Kingston Township Meeker County Minnesota.

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Solway Minnesota.

The photographer is Bean of Sioux Falls. Since this Cabinet Card is not marked South Dakota it could have been Dakota Territory or D.T. as some photos are marked prior to 1889.

That baby looks as sweet as it can be. Sadly the photo is not marked with any identifying names.

This week we will look at some parents and or grandparents with small children.

I purchased this CdV at the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

The mother and child are both very beautiful. This is a foreign CdV. The child’s plaid dress with the large collar and long bow in the back is really cute!

Towards the top there is a date 1908. Tromso is a village in Norway that is North of the Artic Circle. They say the Northern Lights are fantastic there in the winter. I think I might like to visit there.

Well lets look at some photos of places. In this case it is a mystery place. Perhaps one of my readers will know where it was taken at.
I purchased this snapshot in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada in an Antique Shop.

It was taken on Nov. 18, 1930. The ladies skirt is knee length as is the heavily fur trimmed coat.

In the box of photos were many other photos that were marked Detroit, Michigan. This one was not marked.

Update from Abra:
Gidding is actually Warren & Nellie Giddings, according to census records. They lived in Brandrup, Wilkin County, MN. In 1910, Nellie Green (nee Russell) is a 25 year old divorced mother of two boys, Harold and Jasper Green, living in Prairie, Kansas with her parents. In 1920, she is in Minnesota, married to Warren, and the boys are listed as Giddings. In the 1930 census, the boys are still at home with their parents, and they are listed as adopted sons of the head of household (Warren). Jasper is now going by Jack.

Warren Lewis Giddings (1872-1950) died in Los Angeles. Nellie (1883-1974) died in San Diego. Jasper (1906-1970) died in Los Angeles. Harold (1904-1978) died in Breckenridge, Wilken County MN.

Harold had a couple sons, with a likelihood they are still living. I will see if I can find them and get that info to you or see if I can find a family tree..

1910 Federal Census has Reynolds at age 4, living with his parents, Jay and Emma, in Cassleton, ND. His father is a life insurance salesman.

1920 Federal Census: Reynold is 14, living in Cassleton, ND, with his parents Jay and Emma, and 4 year old sister Marvel. His father is a self- employed life insurance agent.

1925 ND Census:
Reynolds S. Bishop, 19, is listed in the household of his parents, Jay and Emma Bishop (family 131) in the city of Cassleton. There is also a Marvel A. Bishop, female, age 9. However, he is found on another census page for Fargo. There is no address listed, but Reynolds Bishop, age 19, is living in dwelling # 3, and is listed as family #14. Family #13, also of dwelling #3 is Phila Corcoran, age 53, and her daughter, Alice, age 19.(this is important—see next census). Also living in dwelling #3 is family # 14, George (30), Lena (31), and Lois (4) Holicky. There is no other information given, so not sure if it is a house with boarders, or some sort of apartment complex.

1930 Federal Census: Reynolds S Bishop, born 1906 in ND, living in Fargo, Cass, North Dakota. He is head of household and has a wife, Alice, same age, as well as a 2 ½ year old daughter, Phila, AND a mother-in-law, Phila Corcoran, age 60. Reynolds is a department manager in the Life Insurance Industry. (I think his occupation fits with the picture!)

This is a CdV from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

This CdV has a pink backing. In 1885 it was very popular to button just the top button of your suit coat.

A. Hanson was in Lanesboro during the years 1880 to 1887. A. Hanson ran the first photo studio in Lanesboro and sold it in 1887 and moved to Tacoma Washington.

Mr. Louis O Ottestad was born the 15th of May 1854 in Oslo, Norway and died the 25 Feb 1926 in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington. He married Anna Thilise Stokke in July, 1883,in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was born the 13th of October 1858 in Trondhjem, Norway and died 19 Jun 1935 in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington, USA . They had the following children: Eunice Dorothea Ottestad, Harold F Ottestad (born Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington, USA), Louis Edward Ottestad (born Sioux Falls), Lucy Amanda Ottestad (15 Nov 1885 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, South Dakota), Justin Walter Ottestad (28 Jan 1888 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, South Dakota), and Clarence Norman Ottestad (4 Nov 1893 in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington, USA).

From what I read..his parents were O. B. and Anna Ottestad. In 1867 they moved to Minnesota. Then moved to South Dakota in 1879. It is unclear if he moved to South Dakota with his parents at that time or moved there after he was married in 1883. In 1889 he moved to what is now Bellingham Washington and was in the hotel business.

He could have had his photo taken in Minnesota on a trip back to woo his gal from Minnesota..so we will date this photo 1883.

Alex L. Black was born in Wisconsin, USA on 19 Apr 1864 ( 1865?) to Alexander Lowe Black and Eliza Jane Baldwin.

Alexander Lowe married Clair ( Clara) Harrison and had a son named James. Alex passed away on 15 Oct 1922.

I think this photo may have ended up in the hands of an old lady. Possibly James was not married. Possibly an old lady gave this photo to the daughter of one of her friends.

The photographer was M L Moldrem of Elbow Lake Minnesota. He was in business 1914 to 1918, 1922 and 1926. I think this is most likely from the 1914 to 1918 time frame.

Hulda Augusta was born May 11, 1880. She married John Brennin. She had two children Jack and Kenneth. She died October 02, 1969 in Hoffman Minnesota.

Anna Amanda was born May 14 1879.
She married Ellis Bowyer.
Anna died in 1954.

Both girls ( they were born just one year apart) are daughters of Nels Lundstrom and Bengta Olsdotter.

Emily was a Country School Teacher. She had two children John Lundeen Skoog born in 1898 and Esther Hildegarde who married Earl S. Erenbrak.
Emily died September 18, 1951

William Frederick Krueger (who was listed in the 1920 US census as William I.) born in 1874 to Daniel and Wilmenia 'Kreuger' in 1874 in Iowa.

William F. died in Cresco, IA in September 1965. He had nine children - so if (big if) this is "him" it's going to take a lot of digging!

Another possibility from Abra:
I found a different William I (or S, or D, depending on which census I am looking at). He was born in Minnesota and seems to have died in Minnesota, though he spent his working career in Chicago Illinois(1910 & 1920 census) and Detroit Michigan (1930 census) working as a telegraph operator. He was married to Kitty,; they had no children. I am sending a message to someone who has him in their tree to see if they can identify him.

John Phillips was there from 1878 to 1879, C.A. Phillips was there in the 1890’s and F. H. Phillips was there in 1902. Many sons following in their fathers footsteps with photography.

When I was at the Antique Mall in Detroit Lakes the other day I found a perfect New Years photo.

I have never seen a magnum of champagne before..is it just a larger than normal bottle? These ladies seem overjoyed..I wonder who has his glass or is he just going to sip out of the bottle?

I don’t know if I wrote you since we moved in Sept. but anyhow we did into a place by ourselves now. You don’t see much of the house here but the rest is for u to see when u come down. How are you anyhow? It seems there is quite a spell between our correspondense isn’t there? Guess we are both really bussy house wives huh? Haven’t we had the most lovely fall it has shortened the winter and of course we don’t mind. In case you don’t know our family increased to 22 now! and that I have for Xmas day dinner but I just can’t make myself believe we’re so near Xmas because of the weather we’ve had. Finally some Christmas photos! This snapshot is from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

This one is marked on the back Christmas 1949. They must have gotten a new grandchild..the baby looks to be about a month old.

I think the gentleman must have been some kind of a clerk or perhaps a bank teller..he has one of those elastic bands just above his elbow. The wall paper is as wild as the woman’s dress.

Another snowy photo! We have very little snow here in Minnesota..it will be a brown Christmas..I hope we get some frost!

I bet he didn’t shovel that sidewalk. It looks like he is ready to go plug his car in or put up some Christmas lights outdoors. ( Cars up here in the North..have engine heaters in them..and you can plug your car in during extremely cold weather to help it start.)

This photo seems to have been taken in a very small town. Three buildings off to the left and what looks like a Grain Elevator off to the right. I think this photo was taken in the 1940’s or the 1950’s.

This is a snapshot from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

It has a late 1910 to 1920’s feel to it. The gals have dark stockings..and it is hard to see if they have boots on or shoes. Dark stockings were worn until after WWI in 1918. Women in the wilds of the Midwest may have worn the dark stockings longer than other women. The hemline of the coats are between the knee and the ankle which is typical of the 1920’s.

I am not sure where I got this old photo..it may have been in the first box of old photos.

My Dad says he thinks that is a 1928 or 1929 Model T Coupe in the background. The horse is hooked up to a stone boat and they are most likely going logging. A stone boat is like a sled..it is used to haul heavy stuff like huge stones or logs. Some stones boats were metal with hinges and some were made of wood. They make short work of moving heavy cumbersome objects.

It could be just about any place that gets snow..I immediately thought of Duluth Minnesota. It is a town full of residential areas with raised lots where the houses were built and the streets and sidewalks are on a different level.

Here is another snowy photo. This is from the Antique Shop in Solway.

I can remember snow drifts like these on the country roads in the 1950’s in Minnesota. It was like driving through a tunnel.

These snow drifts are over a mile long and places as high as ten feet.

This photo has the same handwriting as the one on Monday so I will say that these snow banks were in between Ada and Crookston Minnesota.

Last Monday Nancy asked : I'm curious: do you have any idea how the roads were plowed and the snow piled on the side?
My uncle in South Dakota was hired by the State to plow the highway to the state line (about 10 miles). He used a team of horses.

I have also heard of teams of horses being used. I have several photographs of my relatives and an early snowplow..the snow was so deep that a crew of guys had to help shovel in front of the snowplow. The photographs are not very good..but here they are. My Grandfather and my Uncles are in this old photo.

When I was little in the 1950’s we had a driveway that was very long, my Dad would shovel the entire driveway by hand early in the morning or late at night.

This is the bus between Ada and Crookston making two trips a day.

My Dad identified this as a Model A Bus.

I wrote about this photo before on my other blog. A bus still travels between the two towns.

Ada and Crookston are two towns in Northern Minnesota..not too far from where I live.

This is a photo from The Tin Ceiling in Park Rapids, Minnesota. They save old photos for me to look at and I go in every so often to look them over.

My Dad said that this car may be a Ford. The photo is stamped on the back Arrow Photo Service Minneapolis Minn. A family group posed near a car. I think they took photos of the relatives coming and going outdoors because they did not need a flash. The purpose of this visit just might be that almost new baby.

Lately I seem to be getting more of these photos that have a fancy black border. They seem to be from the 1930’s to the 1940’s.

This is a great old photo. Most likely taken in Minnesota in the 1930’s.

My Dad said that these cars are both early 1930’s cars. The license plate says B 33-116 Minn

Further research finds dark plates with white numbers in the years 1931, 1934, 1936 and 1938.

They certainly are a dressed up bunch, everyone has a hat! It must have been a Sunday afternoon!

This is a CdV from the antique shop in Dorset Minnesota.

I thought at first glace that this was a foreign photo. I was wrong. This CdV has a pink backing. Samuel Van Grieken was the photographer in Keokuk Iowa.

Samuel Van Grieken was born in Holland in 1840 and came to America with his Grandparents in 1845. He was an orphan. While in New York City his Grandfather died. When he was 13 years old he and his Grandmother moved to Keokuk Iowa..and he remained there throughout his life. He died in 1893.

We do not know the name of the gentleman in the photo. I would guess that those were not his pants from the look of the thick hem. The vest is often called a waistcoat..I guess because it covers you to the waist. In this case it appears to be a double breasted waistcoat or vest.

Cook Ely was in Oshkosh Wisconsin from 1879 to 1895. He mentored Beatrice Tonnesen. Beatrice was hearing impaired, her Mother paid Cook $100 to teach Beatrice about photography. At that time not many women were photographers. She became a well known photographer in Chicago catering to the wealthy.

I believe this is Hazel and Harold Ham(m), children of Joseph Hamm and Julia Rasey. Hazel Vivian Hamm was born Nov 8, 1888 in OshKosh. It is hard to tell where things go after that, as most of the 1890 censuses are lost. I find Harold and Hazel and with two older siblings and one younger sibling in the 1900 census in Mapleton MN. However, they are listed as stepchildren of Martin Pratt (mother's name is Julia).

My thought is their father probably passed after the youngest child was born and mom remarried to a man 27 years her senior.

I find Hazel V Grover in the 1920 census in Mankato & 1930 census in Ohio, with her mother living with them. In 1930 she has a 6 year old daughter Janice.

In searching family trees, I found a couple. One lists Harold as having had a number of children and some may be living. I will go ahead and message the owner of the HAMM family tree and send them a link to your site to see what comes of it. Fingers crossed! ~Abra

This is a Real Photo Postcard from Tulla, she bought it at an antique shop.

Stalley of Jamestown ND took this photo between 1904 and 1918. It is an Azo Postcard with arrows pointing up.

A Mother with three children..her dress looks to be a skirt with a long jacket..and her shoes are very worn. Her watch chain is a bit tangled up..no doubt from struggling with children. You can see the child on the right was not sitting still!

This is another photo from Tulla.

This young lady must have graduated from high school, she has some sort of certificate in her hand.

Her gown seems to have very large sleeves. It is adorned with ribbons and bows and has some smocking on the front. She has a small brooch on her gown and a large bow in her hair.

The photographer is Hostetler of Davenport Iowa. The Davenport Public Library houses a collection of all of the negatives and many of the photos he took between 1895 and 1920. If we knew her name we could search..her name may be on the back..but it is too difficult to read.

I did find a Susan A Noyes who was the wife of William H Noyes who were both 60 years old in the 1910 Census in Sawyer County Wisconsin in the Village of Winter. William H was a Newspaper Editor. They had two children Edna “Irene” and Thomas. This could be one or the other of them with their spouse and children. I am curious if one of them had two sons? ( She had five grandchildren.) If Susan wanted the photo returned to her apparently it was important to her, however it could have been a next door neighbor..who knows? Susan died in 1934.

According to the 1930 US census, Thomas E Noyes (b. 1892) was married to Lucille R Noyes (b.
07-Oct-1897 d. May-1969 at the age of 71 in Milwaukee, WI) and had a daughter, Hildagarde C Noyes (b. 1923) lving with them.

Irene Edna Noyes (b. 15-Jun-1887 Prineghar, Iowa d. 7-Jan-1942 in Monterey, California) married George Adelbert Walter on 27-Jun-1906 in Birchwood, Washburn, Wisconsin)

They had seven children - some showing as still living.

This is another of Tulla’s photos from an antique shop.

This beautiful young lady has finger waves in her hair. Finger waves are shaped with your fingers and a comb while your hair is wet. Some styling gel helps.

She is wearing a frock that has a tier…the fabric must have flowed when she walked.

This photo was most likely taken in the late 1920’s or early 1930’s. I could not find information on the New Hennepin Studio in Minneapolis Minnesota. There are no other markings of any kind on the photo.

This is a photo from blog reader Tulla.

Here is the back of the photo. The photo was most likely taken in 1901.

I did find them in the 1910 Census. The parents of these boys were Ariston and Mary Lord who were both born in Maine. In 1910 Ariston was a foreman of a lumber company. I also found him in the 1880 census in Muskegon Michigan working in a mill.

The last time I can find the boys is the 1920 census, they are still living with their parents at 903 Beltrami Avenue in Bemidji Minnesota. Elbridge is listed as a railway laborer. His name is spelled Albridge in some records and Elbridge in others. His brother may be Harey or Harry.

Elbridge Kimball Lord (b. 26-Jan-1897 d. 23-Aug-1963 in Minnesota at the age of 66) and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. He was a Private in the US Army in WWI.

I am much less certain about his brother, Harry Ariston Lord, I think he was (b. 26-Sep-1899 d. Mar-1973 in Florida at the age of 73)

Another Update from Iggy:
Elbridge married an Ella B. Lord (b. February 2, 1897 d. June 1, 1987 at age 90 years in Minneapolis, Hennepin County).

"Hovey A." married Edith Lord (b. 22 Jan 1899 d. Mar 1979 in Florida), "Hovey and Edith" are in the 1930 US census twice. They were counted in Minnesota and in Washington DC.

This week we will look at photographs from blog reader Tulla from Minnesota. She bought the photos at an Antique Shop. She is downsizing and hated to throw them out, so she mailed them to me. I hope we can find some family for them. Some have names, some do not.

This is a very large photo, it measures 14 inches by 12 inches.

The photographer was Tinsley Studio in Corning Iowa. Apparently he went out of the studio to take photos. I found a C. D. Tinsley in Corning Iowa in 1907. I will guess that this photo was taken sometime between 1900 and 1910. The house is lovely, how wonderful for it to appear in the photo. It must have been important to the people in the photo..perhaps it was their childhood home?

I sent it off to Red Wing Minnesota the end of December in 2010, eleven months ago to David a grandson of Minda Jellum.

It has been so long, that I will declare this one a full circle. He didn’t seem real thrilled by my phone call to verify his address and his relationship to the gals on the postcard.

Abra found this info on these girls:

Minda Hansina and Gina Karina Jellum were born in Wanamingo, Goodhue Co., MN to Iver Jellum and Martha Jordahl. They were the youngest of 8 children. Three older sisters were Clara Justina(1884), Ida(1886), and Hannah(1888). Three older brothers were Emil(1891), Joseph(1893), and Martin(1896).
Minda was married to Oscar Pearson. According to a family tree, Minda & Oscar were married in March of 1926. They lived in Featherstone, Goodhue Co, MN in 1930, and had one son (I will not name here, as I believe he is still alive). The 1930 census transcript on ancestry.com lists him as age six, but when I look at the image, it is chicken-scratched, so I am not sure he was born then, or later. The family will have to verify, I believe. This son had 4 children (2 girls, 2 boys), and at least 2 grandchildren (who bear middle names of their great grandparents). I didn't follow all the children, as we will let the family tell some of their own story if we make contact. ;-) Minda passed away at the age of 88, on June 5, 1986.

Gina was married to John Edward Benson on October 16, 1926. They had 2 sons who died as infants:Robert Milo(12-28-1927 to 01-10-1928)& Leslie Everett (Jan 1932 to 8-19-1932). I didn't find a record of any other children. Gina passed away Aug 23 1991 at the age of 93. She is buried in Cannon Falls, MN.
I am not sure who Aunt Stina is--could be either side, but I didn't follow that up too closely, as that is something the family could tell us. (You will note that I included the middle name of the oldest daughter--Clara Justina--as I think she could/may be named after her aunt "Stina.") I think you are pretty accurate on the dating of this photo, as both girls were apparently married in 1926. It does look as if the seated girl is wearing a band (or two) on her left ring finger, so maybe this is around the time of one of their marriages? Who really knows? I could not find either girl in the Minnesota online marriage system, so I am thinking they married in a bordering state, perhaps. I could search further or once again allow those details for the family to share. I will send contact information to you shortly, Connie! ~Abra

I found some info on Elmer Westling and thought these photos were of his sisters and his sisters children. Iggy helped with the research! Nothing happened with these photos for quite some time then one day Annette found them on the blog.

She wrote:

Hi my name is Annette Thank you for finding these photos.My grandma Selma lived to be almost 101 and one of the children on the photo just turned 95 and we had a big family party today. Again thank you so very much.

I heard from her again that she had received the photo.

After finding out that these were the Lunneborg sisters I sent out a message on Facebook to a possible relative. And waited. One day I received this email.

Photo 516 is a picture of four of my grandfather's (Nelmar Lunneborg) sisters. They lived on a farm in Milnor, North Dakota. There were 16 children born to Nels and Ellite. Nels has four surviving children including my father. Is there anyway I can obtain the photo? Thanks Sandy

Thanks for the picture you sent me a few weeks ago. The picture is of my father Kenneth Litchfield. He was born March 11, 1903 on his fathers farm SE of Gwinner, ND. My great grandfather Albert Litchfield moved from Massachusetts to the Truman Minnesota area about 1880. His son Roland (my grandfather) moved to ND in 1901 where he bought a quarter of land SE of Gwinner. Albert was a civil war veteran wounded at the battle of Balls Bluff, VA on Oct 21, 1861. I have a picture of his wife Annie, but do not have one of Albert. If you should ever run across on I would be happy to pay you for it. It may be possible to find one in an old Truman newspaper, but I would have to go there to research it.

This was a very round about Full Circle. One day I got an email from Mary. She found Forgotten Old Photos through an Internet search for her Great Grandfather who was a photographer. She is the Great Granddaughter of Ole Flaten. Her Grandfather was Oscar Marius Flaten and her father was Oscar Miller Flaten. Her father learned the photographic trade from Ole.

I gave her what info I had on Ole, and I told her if she would like one of the photographs that I had that was by him and it was unclaimed I would mail it to her.

Mary liked this one, and thought it somehow looked familiar to her.

To me, the gentleman somewhat resembles my grandfather (Ole E. Flaten), especially the eyes and mouth. So, I am wondering if this might be his brother, Gilbert E. Flaten, who I learned from your site also was a professional photographer over in Fargo.

According to the above link, their wedding date was around 1891. It makes sense that Gilbert would have his brother Ole photograph them. However, the cabinet card lists Ole's studio locations as "Moorhead, Halstead, and Lake Park", although the MN historical society lists Ole's Halstead location beginning as of 1893... so, not quite sure about all this yet.

There are many notations. Mo 418, Minneapolis Tribune Co. and Mrs. A. Odegard Cor. Chestnut Street + 9th Ave. Grand Forks, N. Dak. and JAJ 1.50 ( Johns mark and the price 1.50 for the card.)

The photographer was A. F. Burnham of Fairbault Minn. he was in business during the years 1878, 1884 and 1895. I will pick 1895 for the date of this photo because North Dakota did not become a State until 1889… before that time it was known as the Dakota Territory.

This is a CdV from Christiania (Oslo Norway) The photographer won lots of awards and proudly displays them on the back of his work.

I find it a little strange that this CdV has a name and a date on the front of the CdV. Perhaps his family was wealthy..or famous or perhaps the card was used as a Funeral Card and sent to relatives in the United States.

The photographer must be Ludwik Szacinski de Ravics, http://bit.ly/uqb9Et . Born in Poland, refugee after rebellion, trained in France, to Norway in 1865.

In Christiania from 1869. Became royal photographer in 1888, lots of medals.
He died in 1894, but it seems his widow continued his practice until 1916.

Karl Ingelsen is found in the Norwegian census from 1900, at the farm Fevik in Nannestad. http://bit.ly/sA45ds

His father, Ingel Kristoffersen was married to Dortea Jensdatter, the daughter of Kari from yesterday. So Karl is probably Kari's grandson. Dorthea not listed in the census, and Ingel is listed as widower, so she is probably dead by then (in 1887, according to the ancestry.com link from yesterday).

It seems Karl (in 1900) is married to a Mina, and they have two children, Ingvald I. (1897) and Ivar K. (1899). The ancestry-link list only Ivar K.

It seems hard to find any of these names in the emigration records.

The name on the photo seems to be spelled with an "ash" - Karl Ingelsen Fævik.

This lady looks awfully tiny to me..but her hands look very large. I wonder what her bonnet with the long ribbons is called?

This is the back of the photograph. Note the 8 with an x under it and then a 78. I think this may mean that the photograph was taken in August of 1878.

It says that Auguste Havée was born and trained (with "the famous Professor M. A. Gaudin", Paris) in France. He practiced at the Norwegian west coast in 1859 (Stavanger, Haugesund, Bergen), but moved to Christiania before 1865. He died 1880, which probably means that this photo is from between 1865 and 1880.

The spelling "Kristiania" rather that "Christiania" could indicate that the photo is from after 1877.

I read the last name as Slattum. There are two Slattum in Norway, both just north of Oslo:
Slattum, Nittedal
Slattum, Nannestad

One might read the lower left text as "Nanstad" (with much good will), which could mean Nannestad?

Searching Norwegian census data (http://bit.ly/uSLQKO), I found the following inhabitants at the farm Slattum in Nannestad, in 1865:
Jens Hovals., husband, farmer
Kari Knudsd., wife
Dortea, daughter
Berte Marie, daughter

Kari was 62 in 1865, so born approx. 1803.

"Hovals." above should probably be "Hovelsen".

Nannestad is often pronounced Nann'stad and that's probably it's spelled incorrectly.

Since she was born 1803, she also experienced the great Norwegian famine of 1809. That may explain the seemingly tiny body.

She married Jens Hovelsen, Slattumeie who was born in 1786

Another Cabinet Card from Solway Minnesota.

This young gals dress has a series of trims down the front, wide ribbons and many pleats. She also has a large brooch of some sort. Her sleeves seem lifeless and sad. I wonder if the papers she is holding or the papers on the stand have an real significance?

Pont Soderberg was the photographer in Sutton Nebraska. I know he was there for sure in 1894 from a list of business's in Sutton .. he might have been there from 1890 to 1905.

This is another Cabinet Card from Solway Minnesota.

The dress is somewhat severe with close fitting sleeves, with a row of buttons and many rows of trim down the front. The back of the dress looks like it is gathered..it may have had a bustle..I am not sure. This young lady has a little style of her own..she has added a ribbon with scalloped edges that she tied around her neck.

The very ornate backdrop is spoiled a little by the straw looking matt on the floor.

This is the back of the Cabinet Card. The photographer Ed Wiekhorst from Hooper Neb was in business there in the 1880’s and 1890’s.

This is a Cabinet Card from Solway Minnesota.

The photographer was O.K. Lee from McIntosh Minn. Mr. Lee was in business there from 1896 to 1899.

The mutton sleeves, were reminiscent of a mutton chop on a bone, wide and puffy at the top and then becoming narrow and tight near the elbow. This dress is a perfect example.

We also get a perfect view of the photographer’s fringed chair.

This is a group of service men and their wives or girlfriends in 1946 at San Antonio Texas. All the men are in uniform and the women are in civilian clothing.

For now this group remains unknown. Perhaps some day someone will wander by and identify them.

Today we have a photo of a Soldier in San Antonio Texas in 1946. There is a developing mark by Fox that is noted on the back of the photograph with the city and the year.

These photos were in the “ My life Margret Lundborg” group of photos that I purchased at an antique shop in Brainerd Minnesota.

We can see for the first time the photographers shadowy head..but it still doesn’t give us a clue..man or woman photographer??

A Soldier gets married. This was most likely after the war, I say that because most brides didn’t wear fancy white dresses during the war. This bride wore a fingertip veil and her wedding frock had a train that she has gathered up in her hand.

It wasn’t a summer wedding. It looks like early spring to me..March or April. I hope they were a happy couple and were married a really long time.

A Soldier returns home to family. There are many photos with different people..I chose this one because it shows a rural area.

The Soldier has a gal.

The photos were developed on Velox paper. None of them are marked with a name or a date.

I think this Soldier may be the same soldier that we have seen several times..the one named “Gene”. What do you think?

Margaret Elizabeth Larson nee Lundborg (b. July 4, 1915 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania d. April 30, 2010 at age of 94 in Brainerd, Crow Wing, MN) She was the daughter of Samuel (b. 1870 in Sweden d. Dec. 2 1942) and Selma Lundborg (b. 1876 in Sweden)

I found this Obituary for a Margaret Lundborg.
Margaret Elizabeth Larson, 94, of Brainerd, died Friday, April 30, 2010, at Harmony House.

Services for Margaret will be 11 a.m., Friday, May 7, at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.

Margaret was born July 4, 1915, in Pittsburgh, Pa. Early in her life, Margaret moved with her family to the Brainerd lakes area. She was united in marriage to Harry Larson. Harry died in 1962. Margaret owned and operated Lundberg Jewelry in Brainerd for many years. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross, Zonta, Eastern Star, and a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed the outdoors.

Margaret will be missed by her cousin, Ruth Maples, of Brainerd; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry and her parents.

It was developed on September 5 1945. The photos could have been taken anytime or anyplace prior to that date.

I have finally decided that the photo processing center was called Illini Quality Service. The words form a triangle and there is a photo of an Indian Chief in the center. Chief Illini was the official symbol of the University Of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. Chanute Base is nearby..I only know it as an Air Force Base..but it could have been Army/Air Corps Base back then.

These are WW2 era photos. Now for a question? Could these possibly be photos taken at a facility where POW’s went before they came back to the States? Last night I was searching names and had a hit on this fellow. There was a Charles Eubanks that was a POW. His great granddaughter left a message on a POW site in 2002. I emailed her.. you never can tell.

This is Charles Eubanks from Little Rock Arkansas on the left and “Gene” on the right. I believe that Gene was from Minneapolis Minnesota. I also believe that he is a relative of Margaret Lundborg’s..that was the name on the outside of this package of photos.

The second one is not marked. Possibly Okinawa..we have no way of knowing for sure. The Battle of Okinawa was waged from April 01 to June 21 1945.

Last spring I happened upon a whole bunch of Military Photographs. Most are snapshots. They were in a bag along with other photos in an antique shop in Brainerd Minnesota. On the outside of the bag was this notation: Margaret Lundborg My Life 1930. It may or may not be a clue.

After looking at the photos I “think” that her brother may have been in the service..although it could have been her.

The Battle of Leyte an Island in the Philippines dates from 20 Oct to 31 December 1944. It was 67 years ago and I am doubtful that we will be able to locate any of the people in these photos..but we may be able to locate family.

96th Division on Leyte and off to the side Taken on Leyte.

Lent, Hunt, Johnson, Cortez, Athens, Ragland, Thomas, Strom, Hart, Ponds, Meget, Palm, Libienthal, Ludwick, Casdollar

Today is a special day! Today marks the Two Year Anniversary of this blog. I had hoped to have 36 Full Circles by now..instead I will be happy with the 33 that have been accomplished.

I still search out and collect old black and white photographs…especially ones with names on the back. I frequent local Antique Shops where they all know me by name.

This is a tea party photo that I purchased at Buggy Wheel Antiques near Lake Park Minnesota. It most likely from the 1940’s or the early 1950’s.
