On the other hand, it is sad that someone didn't cherish these enough to hang on to them...that, to me, is always the biggest mystery!

Sorry, I haven't had a lot of time to help out lately. He is listed in "Pioneer Photographers from the Mississippi to the Continental Divide: A Biographical Dictionary, 1839-1865" by Peter E. Palmquist and Thomas R. Kailbourn. He employed a William Henry Jackson who "worked as a painter and retoucher at Hamilton's gallery..."

J. Hamilton was noted for his fine carte de vistes (many produced in Omaha).

Hamilton owned a number of photo studios, and several in Sioux City from at least 1870 until after 1890. His gallery was located on Pearl Street in 1870 to 1875 which fits in with your dating. His most well-known work is a sterographic series, "Views of the Corn Palace" (1888-1889). If I get time during the noon hour, I'll see if I can track down "Florence" and see if I can find pictures of the Corn Palace.

:)Intense Guyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08441598926026727682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2320880361203053560.post-73020141032813412062010-10-13T05:23:19.998-05:002010-10-13T05:23:19.998-05:00How very interesting these photos are.
