Photo Number 2471

This is a photo from the antique shop in Laporte Minnesota.

Louella and Loren Laporte ant

The photographer was J Johnson in Detroit Minn.  Detroit was lengthened to Detroit Lakes in about 1926.  There was too much confusion between Detroit Minnesota and Detroit Michigan.

“It was not until 1926 that the townspeople voted to rename their municipality “Detroit Lakes”—many residents were tired of their mail and parcels being sent to the bigger and better known Detroit to the east.”

Luella and Loren Laporte back

So Luella and Loren were born before 1926….unless the photographer was using up old cardstock.

The Minnesota Historical Society has John Johnson in business in Detroit Lakes in 1902.  They also say he worked until the 1940’s.

Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Well, it looks like that county had a good number of young Lorens resident there before 1926. And some Luellas, too. But no families with both in the same household that I could find, at least for the next census (1930). Perhaps the time frame reached way before those dates you pinpointed? When was that style of photograph frame prevalent?

It is a darling photo. I agree with Tired Teacher. It would be lovely for that photo to find its way home!

  3. I did find a Louella (spelled wrong in census) and Loren in 1900 census. Louella was 4 and Loren was 0. It it possible this photographer was operating in 1900--or could the picture have been added to the card later? This particular Loren and Louella lived in Lake Eunice township, Becker County, just west of Detroit Lakes. Do the two in the picture look like they could possibly be 4 years age difference? Seems possible to me.

    1. Yes the photographer could have been working in Detroit (Detroit Lakes) earlier than 1902. The Historical Society does their best but often they are off a few years.
Yes they look to be three or four years apart in age.
