This is a Real Photo Postcard from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. It is an AZO postcard used from 1904 to 1918.

I do not think it is basket, more likely a container to hold water. There is a hand pump on the side and a pipe runs to the container. Perhaps fresh mountain or spring water?
The cave opening might be one of the caves in St Paul (Pig's Eye) bluffs of the Mississippi. There looks to be a wire on the steep slope with rough steps on the left for helping folks go up and down. There appears to be a stream on the left - and I would second Kim's thought, a water pump...
