Photo Number 1788

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Madison Indiana.  I bought it because of the buttons and the brooch.

The photographer is Beatty in Sigourney Iowa

Ed and Leora Cora Shimmin
Both first names have been erased and then added…also I think the last name was added by someone else.

Here is a close up of those buttons.  They must have been handmade and very special to this woman.
This cabinet card has a light pink back.  It may show up as dark pink since I messed with the contrast.  During the 1880’s to 1890’s different colors were used on the face and the back of some cabinet cards.
Thanks for stopping by.

Update from Iggy:
I think the last name is Shimmin. There is a John Shimmin in FindaGrave that lists a son Edward J. They lived in Sigourney, Keokuk, Iowa.

Edward J Shimmen (mentioned above) married Cora Estella Dillon. They moved from Chicago (in 1910) to Pasadena, California by 1920.

From Jacqi:
Ed and Cora had only one child, according to the 1910 census. The son, Fred, eventually moved to be with his parents in California.

After Cora passed in 1936, Fred and his wife Lillian moved in with his dad (Edward Shimmen) in Pasadena. I can't tell whether the younger couple had any children, but likely not. Fred died in 1963, Lillian in 1973. According to Lillian's obituary, she was buried in New Albany, Indiana,

From Connie:
Cora was born in March of 1868 and died in October of 1936.   I am not certain if this is an old enough photo to be Cora...perhaps the photo was TO Ed and Cora Shimmen??

Cora is Find A Grave Memorial# 70345425. Edward is linked in.

John Shimmen (Edward's father) is Find A Grave Memorial# 41924750 (and has a write up about him).

  3. Fascinating buttons. I wonder if the top pin was actually a cameo of someone she knew? Or just a favorite piece of jewelry?

Fred wasn't buried back in Indiana with her, but I can't tell where he was buried...nor find any obituary for him or his parents. All that to say...no idea who would be left as direct descendant to be interested in this photo, although I'm sure Cora had several nieces and nephews whose families might be interested :)

    1. New Albany is near Louisville KY and Madison, Indiana. I wonder... was "Grama Dillon?" the woman in the photo's mother from Fred and Lillian's POV?

    1. BEATTY, WILLIAM (1844–1913)

Beatty had a studio in Sigourney, Keokuk County, in the 1880s and 1890s. In the Keokuk County News of April 24, 1913: “William Beatty, Sr. Dead -Word has been received here the first of the week by the Shanagfelt Brothers living east of town, that Wm. Beatty, Sr. had died at his home in Los Angeles. No particulars are obtainable regarding the cause of death, though he had been a sufferer of heart trouble. The body will very likely be brought here for burial. Mr. Beatty visited here last summer and enjoyed meeting his many friends again, who regret to hear of his death.

From the Keokuk County News of May 8, 1913: “William Beatty was born in Newark, Ohio, March 10th, 1844 and died in Los Angeles at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Renfrew, April 21st, 1913 of heart failure at the age of 69 years, 1 month and 11 days. In 1855 he with his parents moved to Wisconsin, where they lived until 1856 and then settled in Burlington, Iowa, and in 1857 changed their place of residence to Johnson County, Mo. While living there William learned the art of photography and engaged in that occupation many years. He came to this county in 1870 and followed his profession until a few years before he left here. He and his wife moved to Los Angeles, California, about ten years ago. He married Miss Katie Shanafelt in February, 1870. They had four children, three of whom survive him, Mrs. Lottie Renfrew, of Los Angeles, William D. of Pharr, Texas, and Dr. J. David of Los Angeles. Mrs. Beatty died in July 1910. ...
