Photo Number 1575

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.
Anna Onsby DL Ant
Hoiland was the photographer in Benson Minn, he was there in 1878 and 1879.  So that is the date we will give this photograph.

Anna Anesby Ensby?

Anna wears a hat, a brooch, a necklace with a cross, fingerless gloves and she also has a corsage and carries a parasol.  She is all decked out… I wonder what the occasion was?
Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again.
Update from Iggy:
I think this person's last name was misspelled and that she is an Ensby. There is an immigration record showing an Anna Ensby intending to live in Swift County, Minnesota (where Benson is located) and she appears to have moved to Spokane, Washington and served as a domestic (like Rena in Photo Number 1573)

Looking at the link LarsI left for the 1875 Noway census, we see Anna was Rena and Sidsel's younger sister, born in 1859.

  2. You are good, Iggy. I was playing around with Onesby, because I couldn't find any Anesbys. However there are Ornsbys in that area, and Onesbys in other places, so I thought it might be that. I haven't been following as close, so didn't make the connection to the Ensby name of previous photos. I suppose someone spelled it phonetically, which is often the case in many older records, and it depends how the pronunciation sounded to the writer, and then what their most familiar language is. A Norwegian transcribing a German's name, and vice versa, can produce some different results due to vowels (and some consonants) having different sounds in different tongues.

  3. Based on her clothes, I won't have guessed that she became a domestic. I'd love to know more about her story.

  4. I was surprised to see such a light colored outfit. With all the details, this does look like it signifies a special occasion. If it were for a wedding, though, you'd think it would be a photo of both husband and wife. Did these long-distance domestic situations require a photograph to be sent in advance?

  5. This photo was mailed to Karla in Utah today. This photo of Ana Ensby and Rena Ensby Photo Number 1573 are sisters.
