Photo Number 1568

This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.
Stolen or Bakke Mrs Stusruds parents DL Ant
Skrivseth is the photographer in Hillsboro ND
I wonder if these are their children or grandchildren?
There is something about this photo that bugs me, it doesn’t have a usual photo studio quality about it.  It looks more like a reprint from some older  photo or a photo of a photo that was made into a Cabinet Card.

Perhaps whoever wrote on the photo could not remember Mrs. Stusruds maiden name.
Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again.
Update from Iggy:
Julia Stusrud (October 1863 - 1939) immigrated in 1888 from Norway and married Carl Oscar Stusrud in 1896. She is  buried in Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, Traill County, North Dakota.

As to her parent's name, I could not determine that.

Julia had three children (maybe 4) Oscar T. (1897), Benjamin (1901), and Martha (1904). I can't tell if the ages of these children fit those in the photo.

From Susanna: Listing at The Historical Society.
Stasrud [not Stusrud], Carl O. Bakke, Julia T. 05 Dec 1895

  1. I have a wedding photo of my great grandparents from the late 1800s and I think the studio is the same Hillsboro, ND, studio. The corner is torn off but the last 4 letters are left: eth's. This family looks like very recent immigrants with their European clothes. The carpet, chairs, and background are different from the ones in this photo.

  3. A find at the USGENWEB archives. They show marriage records for Traill County, ND, provided by the Traills County Hillsboro Historical Society:

Stasrud [not Stusrud], Carl O. Bakke, Julia T. 05 Dec 1895

    1. Oh well, I'm blushing!
Searched briefly for her parents...maybe you'll find more.

Here is a biography for the photographer JACOB L. SKRIVSETH (1853-1934) by the North Dakota State University, Institute for Regional Studies. There is a photo of him and his wife.

I am not so sure wether the photo was taken in Hillsboro. Maybe it was taken earlier at one of his other locations or maybe even outside while he was travelling. And than later he somehow made a copy at his studio in Hillsboro. Maybe, that is...

    2. IF the photo was taken in Hillsboro when Skrivseth was there between c.1898 and c. 1905 (he really did move about didn't he?) The children might be Julia's. The boys wearing dresses thing always throws me - perhaps the children are Oscar and Benjamin, or Benjamin and Martha - the age separation (for all Julia's children) is 3-4 years.

I don't see any "more likely than any other" candidates for Julia's parents. The MIA 1890 US census is really missed here!

    3. I think it was about a 1870's photo. I think one of the girls is Julia. I think this is a remake of an earlier photograph taken elsewhere...perhaps even in Norway.

    4. My guess is that her parents last name was Bakke.

  4. Know what you mean about the photo quality. Even with my eyes, I can tell it's blurry. Seems unfocused, but maybe it was because the child moved, or for some other reason. The details certainly don't "pop" as you would expect them to on a quality photograph.

  5. This might be the same Carl, born on the farm Studsrud i Høland in Akerhus County, Norway.

    1. It very well could be him. My bet is that this fellow in the photo was born sometime 1830 to 1840..does that make sense? It may have been taken just before they left for America...or just after they arrived.
