I was going to guess 1885 for the date of this photo…it is possible that he was 18 in this photograph.  (His jacket looks like it was just buttoned using the top button…just one of those things that I look for that helps date many photos around 1885.)
Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again.

Update from Iggy:
Willie M Doty (shown in the US Censuses as William M., Will N., Willie M.) was the son of a farmer named Henry S. Doty (abt 1830 in New York) and his wife Rebecca A. Doty nee Hite (1838 in Ohio - 1917 in Oregon).

William M. Doty was born September 1967 in Indiana (some censuses show Missouri) and was married to Mamie (Jun 1861 in Michigan)

The couple had (at least) three children Lyla (Lila/Lisa) M Doty Griffin (abt 1885 in Michigan), Iva M Doty, never married (21 Nov 1896 in Indiana - 20 Sep 1964 in Los Angeles), and Verner C Doty (22 Sep 1899 in Michigan - 12 Jul 1980 in Los Angeles).

Lisa married a George Garfield Griffin (21 Aug 1881) and by 1930 they had five sons: Miles, Lewis, Lester, Russell and Glen. They lived in nearby Pennfield, Calhoun, Michigan.

  3. There are three different Ancestry.com customers who are using digital copies of this photo for their own family trees. Hopefully, at least one of the tree owners is a close enough relative to William Doty to be interested in this photo--or at least could guide us to a closer descendant who might be interested.

I know online family trees are not always error-proof, but from these three trees, it looks like all three of William's children married, and possibly there are descendants from Iva and Verner as well.

  4. I am the seventh of eight children of Russell E Griffin, who was a grandson of William Doty. My name is Mildred (Millie). Russell died in 2012, and his wife, Enid Larson Griffin, died in 2015. I do not have this picture, and appreciate seeing it here!
Iva Doty did Mary briefly in California, but there were never any children. It was officially annulled shortly after marriage. The legend is that he was gay, and it may have been a marriage of convenience to cover that. Vernor did marry, but I do not have info on his children available right now.

  5. Vernor C Doty was also a professional photographer, eventually. Just an interesting side. He did senior year photos for his nephews who lived that long. Don't mean to sound macabre. Lila Doty Griffin and George Garfield Griffin, had the five sons listed above. But Glenn died when he was about five, and Lewis died at about age 22, with one young son (my cousin, John). His wife remarried (a gentleman named Llewellyn Buys) after several years as a widow. John kept the last name Griffin.

  6. BTW, the writing on the back of the photo includes the word Emery. That was Mamie's maiden name, and from census records I've seen, it looks like she was born in or near Hancock/Houghton, Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is Millie Griffin again, Russell Griffin's daughter. For whatever reason, the system is not letting me log in on my cell phone.
