Cabinet Card Wings and things gal Dl Antiques

Her hair what there is of it is curly and pulled back..perhaps what I think appears to be thinning hair is some kind of hair ribbon.  She is wearing a winged large puffy sleeve gown from right around 1895.

Big Hair Shoulder dress DL Antiques

Her hair looks like the style from the 1910-1915 time frame, parted in the center and poufy.  Sometimes the hair was pulled over “rats”  ( forms filled with their own hair).  Those almost bare shoulders and frothy looking gown could have been from that time also.  I am more familiar with the high necked fashions that showed very little skin.

This week we will look at hairstyles!

The photo today is from blog reader Audrey.

Hi! I found the attached photo in an antique mall and I knew I had to email it to you to see if you can help!

This hand colored photo was at the bottom of a stack of old post and calling cards in a small leather wallet. There is nothing in the wallet and no writing on the back that can give me any clues as to who this 1940s beauty is. The antique store is located in Des Moines, Iowa and I thought that since your blog features photos found in Minnesota, maybe, just maybe this was a Minnesota native whose photo happened to land in Iowa. I have contacted the store to see if the vendor who sold the photo can give me details on the estate it may have come from, if any. Until then, maybe your readers can shed some light? Thanks so much for the consideration! Audrey

Mystery Lady

This young gal is wearing a velvet dress with a sweetheart neckline, she may be wearing a matching jacket over the dress.  She looks young to me..17 maybe 18 years old.  She is lovely.

Sometimes posting these unidentified photos is like a shot in the dark..but you never know..someone may know her.

The flowers in the shape of an anchor symbolized that the departed waits safely in heaven.   Not a floral shape that you see in funeral flowers anymore.  However I discovered that some florists will make them up for you.

Geo Kraft was a photographer in Minnesota at 319 7th St.  St. Paul from 1890 to 1899.

A man and a scroll with flowers.  It looks like a memorial photo to me.   This cabinet card is dark green on the front and grey on the back, typical of the 1880’s to 1890.

The photographer is N. E. Daggett of Blockton IA.  Blockton is in south west Iowa along the Platte River.

Carl Overland was a photographer in Minnesota throughout the 1890’s.  Exactly when he was in Belgrade is a mystery.

The gold beveled edges of the cabinet card suggest that it is from the years 1885 to 1892.

This week we will look at some photos that were taken as memorials.  Post-mortem photography took many forms.

This is a copy of a photo that was made into a postcard…most likely to mail to family members far away.  This postcard is from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.  The Cyko postcard is from 1904 to 1920.

Postcard Cyko 1904 to 1920 Death Our Dahling or Darling ML Antiques Erhard

Flowers, streamers and bows with a photograph propped up in the center.  One of the streamers says Our Dahling.

Possibly a child.

In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s people seemed to have a better acceptance of death.  Funerals were often held in the home, in the front parlor.  Sometimes that photo is the only one they had of the person who died.

Plump Lady with sausage curls DL Antiques

The lady has sausage curls and wears a gown that appears to have a bustle.  The bottom of the gown has rouching, ruffles and pleats.  The man is quite resplendent in a dress coat that is trimmed in a black velvet collar and has satin trim on the lapels and the cuffs.  I think this photo is from the early 1870’s.

The photograph part is almost the same size as a CdV.  It has a much fancier mounting than your normal CdV.  The whole card measures 4 1/4 by 6 inches.

Cabinet Card Old Couple Brainerd Antiques

I have no clue what the woman is wearing..a coat…or a dress?? It has dropped shoulders..and that hat or cap?? I searched for a dress like this..it is not a Puritan outfit or a the dress of a Quaker.  Perhaps one of my readers knows?

The gentleman seems to be wearing a morning coat from the 1870’s to 1880’s. A morning coat was usually single breasted. low- waisted and  its skirt cutaway from the center front. ( I can see he is sitting on the skirt of the coat.)

This is the back of the card.

This week we will look at some couples.  Valentines  Day is this week so it only seems appropriate!

This CdV is from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

CdV Couple Brocade Dress Man with hat DL Antiques

This CdV is most likely from the late 1860s or early 1870’s.  The woman’s gown looks like it is a brocade of some sort and has dropped shoulders, the jacket is  trimmed with tassels.  Her ears are showing so that makes it the late 1860’s or 1870’s.   The gentleman carries a Bowler/Derby Style Hat, they became popular in the 1850’s and were popular for men for about seventy years.  The gentleman clothing is a miss match of styles..nothing seems to match in color or fabric.  He carries something in his right hand but it is impossible to tell what it is.

I wonder if they were happy?  Remember typically people did not smile for photos, because the exposure times were so long and because dental care was limited.

Full Circle 67

This photo went home.  To a museum.

Group by Train Winnipeg Antiques

Photo Number 1058

Iggy researched this train and found out that the train was in a museum in Wisconsin.  The Mid-Continent Railway Museum.  The train car is known as Montana Western # 31.  Here is a link to more info on this car.

I donated the photo to the museum.  I heard back from Bill:

Hi Connie:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I must tell you how pleased I was to see the photo of the GN 2313. This photo must have been taken prior to 1940 when the Great Northern sold the car to Montana Western Railroad.

Thanks again for thinking of Mid-Continent Railway Museum and thank you for donating the photo.

Bill Buhrmaster

MCRM Restoration Mgr.

Info from Iggy:

This is a historical railcar.

On October 28, 1925 Great Northern (GN) 2313 was completed. Given the serial number 130, it was the 30th production rail motorcar. GN 2313 first entered service on November 27, 1925 for trains 259 and 260 between Marcus, Washington and South Nelson, British Columbia.

By 1939 Great Northern considered this rail motorcar to be too expensive to maintain. On December 28, 1939 Great Northern sold GN 2313 to the Montana Western. Montana Western merely dropped the first and last digits of the car number. MW 31 operated on the 20.13-mile railroad between its connection with the GN at Conrad,
Montana and Valier, Montana.

Cute kids all with hats.  Perhaps they went visiting on a Sunday afternoon and had their photo taken on some rocks. ( I suppose that was better than sitting in the long grass.)  I think this one is from 1910 to 1920.  Beautiful huge homes in the background!

CdV Lady going Traveling

She is a beautifully dressed lady.  Her Jacket looks to be velvet with satin cuffs, she is wearing leather gloves, holding a flower and greens.  She has a brooch and earrings and a marvelous satin hat that is tied to the side so that it wouldn’t cover up her brooch.  Her skirt looks to be made of satin also, it seems to be a skirt with pleats with a matching apron.

I thought perhaps she was going traveling someplace.

Postcard Man with hat Dorset1

A gentleman with a Newsboy cap which was popular 1890 to 1910.  The postcard is a Cyko from 1904 to 1920.  So I think we can say this is a photo from around 1910.

He seems to be wearing a celluloid collar..taller than most, this one may be called the “Clifton” collar.  These collars were detachable and one woman’s answer to ring around the collar on her husbands shirts.. a entire cottage industry was born..anyone with scissors, fabric and workspace could create a collar.  Collars were stored in a collar tin or circular cardboard box.

I have heard wearing one of these stiff collars was akin to having your neck in a vice.

They are both wearing Newsboy caps..six sectioned crowns with a small brim made in tweeds and wools and popular 1890 to 1910.  The heavy cardstock that the photo is mounted on leads me to believe that this was 1910 or thereabout. His hat is a little bit different style..or else he has it on backwards. At least I think it is a him and a her…relationship unknown.

at the side of Bishopthorpe in front of a hedge.  How do you like my hat?  Notice I’m wearing that rust knit-?  I finally squeezed myself into it.

Too bad she didn’t tell us what her name was.   I think Bishopthorpe is in the UK.  So she could have been visiting or studying abroad.

I will guess this is from the early 1930’s.  The skirt seems a bit long but if she were a foreign gal..1933 might be about right.

Full Circle 66

This was a by happenstance Full Circle.  I was sitting next to a gal at the scrapbooking retreat back in December and she knew Wanda’s relatives.

They contacted me, I mailed off the photo. I asked about several other photos from the same photographer. (They did not recognize anyone.)

So many people had their pictures taken there, my last picture was when I was about 5 and Mr. Anderson died about that time. His wife was a wonderful lady with a heart of gold. She lived in the back of their building until she could no longer be alone. The building sat for several years and before it was taken down, people took boxes full of old pictures.
I want to thank you for the picture and I will be sending you money for postage, so you can send other people their pictures.
