Photo Number 1138

This is a photo from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

Plump Lady with sausage curls DL Antiques

The lady has sausage curls and wears a gown that appears to have a bustle.  The bottom of the gown has rouching, ruffles and pleats.  The man is quite resplendent in a dress coat that is trimmed in a black velvet collar and has satin trim on the lapels and the cuffs.  I think this photo is from the early 1870’s.

The photograph part is almost the same size as a CdV.  It has a much fancier mounting than your normal CdV.  The whole card measures 4 1/4 by 6 inches.

Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)

  1. Oh, my! This couple is certainly dressed for the occasion! Taking in all the detail...even the floor has interesting details...makes me wonder who they were and what their story was!

  2. I do believe your young miss is 'with child' which makes this photo indeed very special because in those days pregnancy was rarely discussed or photographed.
Because of the high rate of infant mortality and death during childbirth it was not uncommon for a woman to be photographed prior to her delivery so there would be something to cherish if death should occur.
If you had a name the birth could have been cross referenced with the 1870 or 1880 US census.
I work for an auctioneer here and have the privilege of seeing many old photos.
    Thanks for sharing this one...
