Photo Number 1134

This week we will look at some couples.  Valentines  Day is this week so it only seems appropriate!

This CdV is from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

CdV Couple Brocade Dress Man with hat DL Antiques

This CdV is most likely from the late 1860s or early 1870’s.  The woman’s gown looks like it is a brocade of some sort and has dropped shoulders, the jacket is  trimmed with tassels.  Her ears are showing so that makes it the late 1860’s or 1870’s.   The gentleman carries a Bowler/Derby Style Hat, they became popular in the 1850’s and were popular for men for about seventy years.  The gentleman clothing is a miss match of styles..nothing seems to match in color or fabric.  He carries something in his right hand but it is impossible to tell what it is.

I wonder if they were happy?  Remember typically people did not smile for photos, because the exposure times were so long and because dental care was limited.

Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)

  1. Could he be holding a cigar in his right hand?

  2. Wish the details for the woman's face were more clear. Do you think she moved? Or just that the photograph is faded?

The details on her clothes remind me that so much of that work was done by hand. Funny how, when they had to take the time to do all that work by hand, so much of it was included in their clothing--whereas now, when we have the equipment to do all sorts of fancy details, we just zip through the simplest patterns and are satisfied.

    1. The photo is faded and yes she may have moved too...they had time to sew back them..especially the young girls..they almost made a job out of it:)
