The fenders have been rounded off at the running boards and running boards removed.  Like the sport cars of the 20s.  That spoiled it.

Richard P. Bissell is a rather well-know author. Son of Fred and Edith Bissell.

"Richard P. Bissell (28 Jun 1913 - 1977) learned about the pleasures and dangers of towboating on the Mississippi during eight years as deckhand, mate, and pilot. A Harvard graduate, he left the river in 1945 to manage his family's business in Dubuque, Iowa, and to become an author of national acclaim."

This is a snapshot from the antique shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

The car is a Model T Ford or a  Tin Lizzie.   Model T’s were made from 1908 to 1927.  Mr. Ford wanted the normal working man to be able to afford a car.

My husband has a model train collection.  O scale, technically O27.   I have found a few old black and whites of trains..old photos of trains are few and far between.

This is a snapshot from the antique shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.

A Great Northern passenger car.   I wonder if they got off the train for lunch?  Is that their lunch off to the right stacked neatly?  Where were they going?  Where had they been?

I love to travel by train..I have been to the West Coast several times..there is nothing quite like traveling on the train.

Update from The Norwegian Guy: Anonymous Hero
It is stated this item was purchased in Erhard, which is a small town in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Also in Otter Tail County there is Clitherall Township, wherein there is a cemetery known as Leaf Mountain Cemetery. In that cemetery is buried Mrs. Ellen [nee Thompson] Anker. Ellen Anker [3/15/1851 - 3/1/1940] was the second wife of Iver Anker [1831 - 1907] who is also buried in Leaf Mountain Cemetery. The photo appears to have been taken in the early or middle part of the second decade of the twentieth-century. Since that was after Mr. Anker's death in 1907, it makes sense that the item was labeled as being taken at Mrs. Ellen Anker's place.

Ellen was born in March, 1851 in Norway and immigrated in 1893. She died on 01 March 1940 in Nidaros, Otter Tail, MN. By 1895, she was the second wife of husband Iver Olson/Oleson (ugh!) (b. March, 1831 d. Nov. 5, 1907) and with son Thomas Marinus Anker (b. Jan. 11, 1895 d. Feb. 19, 1976). By 1930, she left widowed and is living as a boarder with another immigrant from Norway named Gina Hatleskog, who was born in 1857 and immigrated in 1892.

If this photo was taken at Ellen Ankers place, it was likely taken between 1907 and 1918. I suspect the other ladies are likely fellow immigrants, church ladies, and/or family (but it is unlikely to be Ellen's)

This snapshot must be from the 1920’s.  The ties used as an accessory and the length of the skirts says 1920’s. . possibly 1925.

A group of seven children and their parents.  However the five surrounding the parents look like brother and sisters.  The two gentleman flanking the photo..just might be those sisters husbands.  What do you think?

Update From Liv:Ole Olsen and Karine Nilsdatter Olsen have a son born 1859. His name is Nils Olsen.  He married Anette, they had three children Ole Carl Olsen/Aarstad, Gunnar Riis Olsen/ Aarstad b.1896( the boy in the picture) and Aggi Nanna Olsen Aarstad b 1901. That means Karine Nilsdatter is the Grandmother of this boy and my grandfather was his cousin. I have met his sister Aggi in Oslo many years ago.

During the winter of 2011 I featured an entire album of photographs. It was called the Nettie Parks Album.

I purchased the album at an antique shop. 

It held many photographs. They were all mailed to Diane in Washington.

I am a great granddaughter of Josiah S Reese. (1869) You posted a photo # 413 of Josiah S Reese with his wife and two daughters, and one of a Sealia and Lottie Reese # 412. My great grandfather Josiah Seal went by Seal quite often, Sealia was something I haven't seen until this photo!

I mailed the photos to Diana on November 01, 2012.

Ernest I Amundson  Son of Emil Amundson  The photo was taken in Grenada Miss.

I think I may have found him.

His parents were:

Emil Sevrin Amundson (1886 - 1962)
Inga 'Marie' Ronningen Amundson (1890 - 1983)
His siblings:
Ole Edward Amundson (1913 - 1948)*Ernest I Amundson (1915 - 1980)*Arthur M Amundson (1917 - 1999)*Evan Augustin Amundson (1929 - 1990)*Joel Victor Amundson (1932 - 2005)*
And a sister: Charlotte (Ray) Miller
All of his brothers except Ole were in the service. Here is the Find A Grave link to Ernests grave in the Hamar  Cemetery  in rural Rothsay Minnesota..Otter Tail County.

Remember The Woods Farm with the round barn.. Photo Number 962.. this is the same Amundson Family.  I will send Marilyn an email.  She was part of Full Circle 58.

Update from Connie Amundson Peterson:

Ernest Amundson was my Uncle and was a highly decorated World War II Veteran. He served under General Patton during the war and was awarded a Bronze Medal. He was my Dad's older brother. My Dad was also in World War II and worked on the ALCAN Highway in Alaska/Canada. My nephew was given my Uncle Ernest's War Memorabilia so I will make sure that he gets a copy of this photo.

The photographer was Photoreflex Studio – 2nd Floor The Golden Rule in St. Paul Minnesota.  I struck out looking for this studio and the time frame for their business.

I have one more soldier photo for tomorrow.  Then we will do some Full Circles.  I was gone for about a week..I am back now..from Indiana where we visited my husbands sister.  We are usually real “homebodies”..but a few days away does everyone good!  I use Live Writer as a blog writing tool and for this blog I always write the blogs ahead of time..so far it all seems to work for me!

This is a snapshot from the first antique shop in Dorset Minnesota.

I think this soldier may be home on leave.  He also is most likely standing outside his parents house.  I see one Blue Star in the window.  He looks like he is in the Army.

The Blue Star Mothers was formed in 1942.  It was a group of mothers who supported each other and their service member children.  They put a small flag in the window..a blue star for each of their children serving in the armed forces.  A Gold Star was displayed for a son or daughter killed during the war.

This photo was dated May 4 1944.  The war would rage for another sixteen months.

This photo was taken on May 6, 1945.  A day later than the previous photo.  The Army Air Corps fellow is in both photos.  I am not sure what branch of service the young lady is in.  Perhaps one of my readers will know.

This is a snapshot of a service family.

Looks like they might have lived or were visiting 2209 Someplace Somewhere with their new baby and toddler.

As a former service wife..I can tell you that having your husband in the service is not easy.  It is hard for children too to have their Daddy away for holidays, birthdays and special days at school.  Sure the men and women in the service sacrifice a lot..but so do their families at home. ( Stepping off my soapbox now.)

At the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 the guns were silenced and the “war to end all wars” was finally over after four years. The Armistice agreement was signed. The Allies claimed victory and Germany was defeated.  It was called Armistice Day for many years. After WWII it was changed to Veteran’s Day.

I have two photos..of brothers…I think.  I purchased these at the antique shop in Park Rapids Minnesota.

 

On the lapel of their uniform are the initials CHS.  Neither photograph is marked.

CHS may signify Combat Health Support.

The CHS mission--to conserve the fighting strength-- dictates that patients be collected, triaged, treated, evacuated, and/or returned to duty as far forward as possible.

If anyone thinks differently..please leave a comment.

The photographer was Golling of St Paul Minnesota.  I found a Benjamin Golling who was in business for many years in St Paul Minnesota from 1900 to the 1950’s.

Clarence Grieben/ Grisben  had his photo taken in California at Austin Studios sometime during the 1940’s.  He was in the Army.

There is an army record for a Clarence Grieben born March 1, 1910, enlisted in the Army April 10, 1942, release date October 7, 1945. 

Update:  I found a Clarence E. Grieben who was born March 01, 1910 and died September 04, 1985.   Possibly he was born or raised in South Dakota.

This snapshot is from the antique shop in Dorset Minnesota.  These are WWI Soldiers or Home Guard Soldiers.  Home Guard Soldiers were groups of men who got together and protected their communities during WWI. I wrote more about the Home Guard here.

I got a request from a reader.  To help figure out a mystery.

My great grandparents gave birth to 4 children between 1910 & 1915...They divorced in 1916

and in doing so they gave up all 4 of the kids..Now we found on the 1920 census that the 2 boys

were found in a childrens home..then 10 years later they are found in a home for the feeble minded.

10 years after that they were back in there home towns with family members...they both married and

had a good rest of there lives..That is until death took them both to early...And when they did they

took the memories of the girls with them...and no other family member will tell us anything ....My

mom lost both of her parents and a sister when she was only 8 years old...So she grew up not knowing

her fathers side of the family which is one of the 4 kids...

Lisa wrote to me asking for help.  I said I would try..at least the information would be out there.  She sent a little info.

 

Thank You so very much..Will mean a lot to me and my mom..no guarantees understood. But hopefully someone will know for sure who these people are.

1 & 2. My mom was told by a non family member that this photo was her Aunts Minnie & Esther Huffman.....all it says on the back is to uncle Willie ....no date given.

 

3.. we do not know who this baby is. But might be one of the girls or there brother William & Paul Huffman..Nothing written on the back.

4. This might be my moms father William Huffman....But he was never in the military so can't say it is him.

My thoughts:

Photo 1 and 2 ..The girls are too young to have been in this photo.  I would date the photo 1910 to 1915. The boys in the photo are unlikely to be one year apart in age.  So I don’t think it is the boys either.  I would look for other family members that would fit this photo..could possibly be friends and not relatives.

Photo Number 3…it could be any of the four children.

Photo Number 4.  Men that were in the CCC often dressed in this type of uniform. Unmarried unemployed  men during the years 1933 to 1942 often worked in the CCC camps.  I wish I could date the car in the background.
