This is a Cabinet Card from the antique shop near Lake Park Minnesota.
Gordon was a photographer in Owatonna from 1911 to 1916. There is a notation that he may have been in Owatonna in the 1890’s.
The young man is wearing a uniform. It looks to me like he is holding a United States Forage Cap from the Infantry. I looked for his uniform online with out any luck. I think it may be from around 1888.
The ladies dress has a high collar with a matching bow at the waist. The bodice is frilly but not pigeon breasted like those of the early 1900’s. Possibly this dress could be from the 1890’s. Her hat is rather large and appears to have flowers and ribbons.
Thanks for stopping by. Do come again:)
Nice photo, and her hat is something else! It does seem to go nicely with her dress. He was quite the catch, very good looking!
ReplyDeleteHis hat should give you some clues but I bet there are a lot of those to look through to find what it is all about.
ReplyDeleteI love these hat photos!
ReplyDeleteShe looks like the definition of "prim and proper!"
ReplyDeleteI think the hat has crossed cannon on it - The coastal artillery wore such a hat. If the emblem is cross rifles, he was in the infantry. Crossed swords were worn by the cavalry. The stripe means he was in the service for 3 years.
ReplyDeleteThe hat looks like a late 1800 slouch (kepi).
http://www.history.army.mil/html/museums/uniforms/survey_uwa.pdf shows 1872 and 1895 model forage caps. Take your pick. :)
