Photo Number 959

This is a snapshot from the antique shop in Brainerd Minnesota.

Hay Stack Brainerd Antiques

This looks like a hay stack to me.   The women have long hay rakes.  The first hay rakes were made from branches, later they were hand tools similar to our garden rakes today..but wooden with wooden teeth/pegs and larger.  Hay rakes could be used to gather straw too…but this pile looks soft to me like a haystack.

When I was a little girl one year we had several hay stacks in one of our fields..we put up loose hay..and what did not make it in the barn was stacked.  I have a vague recollection of sliding down that haystack.

Thanks for stopping by.  Do come again:)

  2. I keep hoping that one of my kin will show up in your pics. Not yet, but this was at least geographically and time frame close. My McPhersons were in Brainerd, MN in the early 1900s. I'll keep looking and hoping.

  3. I suppose I am also allergic to hay, but I love the idea of being out there and taking a deep breath of country air.

Walking on a field where the grass lies drying in the bright summer sun. Ah, childhood memories.

  5. Hmmm...I was wondering about that guy on top of the haystack. So you say you've slid down one, eh?

  7. I call the ladies' dresses "country casual/work" dresses, which were longer than typical of the period and not made to reflect high/current fashion. This snapshot was probably taken about 1926.
