Aunt Inger Lee
Sylvester Peter Wange was the photographer in Hawley Minnesota. I couldn’t find out what years he was in business.
This may be a photo from around 1895. I guess that date because of the shoulder wings on the woman’s dress.
Thanks for stopping by. Do come again:)
Updates:
From Crex:
There is a Inger Lee (born 1866 in Norway) with 2 young daughters in Hawley village, Clay, Minnesota 1900.
From Iggy:
Inger Lee indeed has two daughters, Clara (b. Oct 1895) and Emma (b. Nov 1898) in the 1900 US Census, but also in the household are nephew Oscar Flater (b. Sep 1881) and niece Nellie Flater (b. Nov 1882).
In the 1930 US census, Clara (34 yo) and Emma (31 yo) are still single, living together and living in Los Angeles, California and both of them are working as Registered Nurses at a hospital.
Clara N Lee (b. Birth: 31 Oct 1895 in Minnesota, d. 7 Jul 1991 in Los Angeles)
Emma C Lee (b. 22 Nov 1898 in Minnesota, d. 22 May 1995 in Los Angeles) married Olav/Olaf/Olof Langeli, a carpenter sometime before 1937. Her death record says her mother's maiden name was Wold.

ReplyDeleteI think the pointy shoulder wings suggest a slightly later date, say around the turn of the century. Perhaps that would fit with the 1900 Census?
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that the name is "Inger Lie", as Inger is Norwegian, and Lie is a very common Norwegian surname (meaning hillside, from farms called this).
ReplyDeleteI think Crex has found them. Inger Lee indeed has two daughters, Clara (b. Oct 1895) and Emma (b. Nov 1898) in the 1900 US Census, but also in the household are nephew Oscar Flater (b. Sep 1881) and niece Nellie Flater (b. Nov 1882).
ReplyDeleteNow to decide whether or not the photo is older than thought, or perhaps mislabeled and actually has the daughters in it. Also, not clear is what happened to ma and pa Flater.

The same census (1900) shows Sylvester Wange (b. 1866 in Norway) as immigrating to the US in 1890 and working as a photographer.
ReplyDeleteHmm.. are these the daughters or another set of newphews/nieces?
My theory is that one of the Flater children labeled the photograph and that Inger is shown with her daughters - the photo would then date to about 1898-9 given Emma being an infant. The older daughter was 3-4 years older, which would seem to fit the photo. The 1898-9 date would also fit the photo-dating by Far Side and reader Brett Payne.
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine having to iron those dresses!

Inger Wold Lee came from Valdres in Norway (inland, mountains). Her father had 14 children:

(And my Lee/Lie comment above is probably wrong.)
Following the link above, Emma and Olav Langli had a child (Charles Langli, named after her father?). He could well be alive today.
ReplyDeleteCharles Langeli, my second cousin, died in 1976. I knew his aunt Hanna fairly well but did not know Charles. I do not know of any children of Charles.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment! :)
