Photo Number 854

This week we will look at one of my favorite categories..children in chairs.   This CdV is from the Antique Shop in Brainerd Minnesota.
CdV Matilda Brainerd Antiques
This is Mathilde or Matilde.  A lovely little girl who is about 9 months old..maybe.  She has a beautiful little dress that is embellished with embroidery and her cross necklace is very prominent.  Both of her shoes may have been under her petticoats..but one escaped.

Mathilde Strandner (Strandness) Finstuen (Finsteun)

JD Kellogg was in Red Wing from 1876 to 1900.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Anonymous:
Matilda Strandness daughter of Joseph Strandness married Andrew Finsteun on January 16, 1909.   They lived in Kenyon Village.  Andrew was a Lawyer and the Editor of the Kenyon Leader, his parents were P.P. Finsteun and Mathea (Golpen) Finsteun.  They came to this country in 1867.

Matilda and Andrew had one son Avery S.

Matilda's husband Andrew served in the House of Representatives from 1923 to 1944, sometime during that time Matilda died.

  1. If this is Mathilde, then her parents immigrated in ca. 1868, both from an area in the southern Norwegian mountains called Torpa.

Both mother's and father's last names are rather rare, and are farms in Torpa.

    Finstuen
Goplen (Arne Goplen is the father of Mathilde's mother)

Perhaps Mathilde married a Strandner later? (Strandner sounds Swedish.)

  3. A more likely alternative: Andrew Finstuen (the oldest brother of Mathilde above), married (according to this) Matilda Strandness (Strandnes), daughter of Jacob Strandnes. I think she is a more likely match.

    More about Andrew.

Strandnes/Strandness is likely a Norwegian name.

  4. Such a sweet photo! And thank you Anonymous!

Kenyon is a city in Goodhue County, Minnesota. It was home to Andrew Volstead - Politician known for the Volstead Act - the act was the enabling legislation for the enforcement of national prohibition beginning in 1920.

Avery Strandnes Finstuen was born 23 Jan 1910, graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1935, married a woman that appears to be living today, and died in Olmsted county in 20 Apr 1955.
