This is a Postcard from the Antique Mall in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.
Ruth and Volney Olson are the most likely names of these two children. The postcard was meant for Mr. and Mrs. C S. Denning.
The Kruxo postcards with the name down the center of the card are from 1911 to 1922. I almost didn’t purchase this card because Olson is such a common name..but Volney..I wonder how common that name is?
Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

ReplyDeleteAccording to Find A Grave, Volnoy Olson married Margaret Brophy. Volney lived in Pine River and is buried in Swan Valley Cemetery, Byron Township, Cass County, MN. He died in 1976.
ReplyDeleteCorrection - Volney's wife, Margaret, who died in 1998 lived in Pine River. The Olson's lived in Crow Wing County at the time Volney died on 16 Jan 1976.
ReplyDeleteThe Olsons never lived in Crow Wing County. They lived in Cass County. Our address was Graff Route, Pine River, MN
DeleteVolney and Margaret had five children (two boys and three girls) born across the years of 1941 and 1952) so it is likely some them are still living.
ReplyDeleteI'll see if I can find an address or three.
Lost is a sea of Olsons for sure:(
DeleteFrustration doesn't begin to describe it. The last bunch of searches I've attempted have all run against brick walls. Time to take a breather!
DeleteWonder what kind of nickname you give someone named Volney. I have never heard than name before.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I love his face! Ha! What a little Scandinavian boy! Looks like he could be anyone in my family......
ReplyDeletePhotographs meant so much more in those day. Now people throw up 10 each day on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteThose children are darling and what a nice photo in the outdoors. I love it....my favorite so far...I have lots of favorites though.
ReplyDeleteVolney was my grandfather. He died when my mom was pregnant with me so I never met him. I have met his sister Ruth. My mom is Volney and Margaret's 4th child. I will forward this to my mom.
ReplyDeleteHi Emily , Contact me through the email on the left in my profile. I am happy to mail you the postcard.

ReplyDeleteVolney was born December 21, 1910 in Leader, Minnesota. He started his adult life during the years of the Great Depression. He always paid cash for whatever he purchased; put his faith in God, and never took a dime of charity. He was baptized, confirmed, and buried at the Swan Valley Lutheran Church, in Leader. He was a brilliant man and a good student. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Agricultural School, and worked as a herdsman on the farm at the Mayo Hospital in Rochester. He also worked as a herdsman at Maple Island Farms near Stillwater, MN. I believe he was working here when he married his wife, Margaret Brophy of Alexandria, MN in Sept. of 1939. Their first son, David Volney Olson, was born on December 6, 1941. David and his wife Ginny now live in Foley, Minnesota. Volney purchased his farm in Cass County, about 20 miles from Pine River, MN, before his second child, Mary Ellen, was born on June 17 in 1943. My mother used to tell of how when she was pregnant with Mary, that Volney gave her a choice to drive their car or herd their cattle to the farm. Margaret, never fond of driving, chose to walk the 7 miles from Leader to the new homestead, behind a small herd of cows. Margaret later became an LPN and worked for many years for the State of Minnesota as a nurse. Mary Ellen lived many years with her husband, Gerald Olin, Sr., in the Phoenix, Arizona area. He passed away about two years ago and she now owns a home in Madison, MN. The youngest Olson daughter, Annette Josephine, was born July 17, 1950. She lives in Brooklyn Park, MN with her husband, Steven Monson. The youngest child is Victor John and he resides in Hyannis, Nebraska with his wife Anita. I am Sandra Ruth and I am the middle child, born in 1945. I am an RN and currently teach for the School of Nursing at the Minnesota University of Mankato. I am named after my Aunt Ruth, the other child in the picture. She was first married to Lawrence Bacon, who also lived in the Leader area. He died and Ruth remarried Herb Crackle. For many years they lived on a farm near Nimrod and Ruth taught school in Sebeka.
Sannie, Thanks for sharing Volney and Ruth's history with us. I will include it in a Full Circle Post.
