Photo Number 795

This is a snapshot from the Antique Shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

November 1958 DL Antiques

November 1958 and this couple is going someplace..perhaps they have been to a wedding.  At first I thought a Prom..but usually Proms are held in the spring of the year.

I love looking around in the photo..noticing his cufflinks and that white shirt with the cuffs.  They are sitting on a piano or organ bench.  That wallpaper is a treat for your eyes and I recall those bronze horses too.  There is a clock between them that shows five minutes to nine..and I think he is holding a dark bottle in his left hand.

I am not sure what that poufy hem is called in the gals dress.  If I recall correctly..the dress is cut longer and the hem has a string that is pulled and then it is stitched in place to the can can slip so it is equally poufy all the way around..I bet it was itchy.  I seem to recall a paper slip too..and stuffing the poufs with tissue paper.  Perhaps a reader has actually worn a dress like the one pictured.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

  2. You've got good eyes! I did not see the bottle but I too remember the bronze horses and LOVE that vintage wallpaper. I thought Prom too but then I see it says November but is that when it was taken or developed? They look awfully young to be holding a dark brown bottle unless it was maple syrup? LOL!

    1. Developed in 1958 it could have been taken anytime that year or the year before:)

  3. What a great 50's photo! Reminds me of some of the ones in my parents old albums. You definitely saw lots of that kind of wallpaper!

  4. I think your first instinct is probably correct about this being a Prom photo. If this family was anything like mine, photos were taken and the film not developed for months.

  5. I wouldn't care how scratchy it is...the soft drape of the dress looks lovely.

  6. One thing to keep in mind when using the date on a snapshot to actually date the photo is that that is only the date the film was processed and printed, not necessarily when the shot was taken. I can remember my folks having film in the camera for a year before getting it processed. We didn't snap photos quickly like we do today. You sort of doled them out over a period of time. So this could be a prom shot.
