Photo Number 640

Here is a farmhouse, two story with a double decker porch.  More clothes on the line and a cute red barn..oh and a garden on both sides of the driveway.  Two chimneys..one must have been for the kitchen and the other for one of the main rooms.

Mrs E Nordstrom

Mrs e Nordstrom two

Mrs. E. Nordstrom.

We had some Nordstroms ( Photo Number 610)  the other day, I emailed them and this was the reply from the little boy with the camera.

My uncle Elmer Nordstrom was married to a girl from the Erskine Minnesota area, her maiden name was Selma Loftgren, She had a sister that was married to a man by the name of Peterson. This could be a picture of the home farm, which I have never seen.

So the best we can hope for this photo is that one of the correct Nordstroms will come by some day and claim the photo.

Lets look at some houses this week.  This is a Real Photo Postcard, it is a Azo postcard with triangles pointing up in the stamp corners on the back..so that means it is from 1904 to 1918.

A large house, with a wrap around porch..with some rocking chairs and clothes hanging on the line.  Might be a Father and a daughter..or maybe a young wife.  It looks to me like this house is in town.

Little girl DL
The photo is by a JW( edited to JA) Tweit (??) of Litchville North Dakota.

Her dress is too large, her sleeves are uneven and those bows are not taming that hair.  She made me smile..I hope you smiled too.

This is the back of the photo.  I think it says:
Edwinea Eckfeld Born May 18 1907 Age 6 years ( The photo must have been taken in 1913)
Daughter of Della Lehman, a cousin  Grandmother Strehlow’s sisters daughter.
There is a mark on the front of the photograph, I am unable to read it.
Edwinea DL
HHW something..I wonder if the photographer signed his photos in pencil.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

On a side note..I featured Photo Number 134 of Eugenia Strehlow Meilicke and her family..do you suppose her Mother was Grandmother Strehlow?  Just a thought, I did get the photos at the same antique shop??

Update from Iggy:
Edwinea Eckfeld was born on May 18 1907 in Columbia Township, Tuscola County, Michigan and died on 28 Feb 1996 in Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan. She was married to Floyd Thomas King (28 Jan 1908-16 Jul 1973).

She attended the Central State Teachers College (Class of 1929) and published "A study of the critical ideas of Sir Thomas Elyot" in 1932.

"In the regular 8th grade examination, Edwinea Eckfeld of Unionville received the highest standing of the 481 students who took the examination. Her standing was 96.6 per cent. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Eckfeld and a pupil of Miss Edna Stroud."

More from Iggy:
On Oct. 22, 1903, Edwin W. Eckfield (b. 1881 in Michigan) married Adella Lehman (b. 1880 in Wisconsin). The Bride's Parent's Names wer Henry and Mina Lehman (both b. 1838 in Germany) and they were living in Liberty Grove, Door, Wisconsin.

Here is the connection with Photo 134.

Adela Lehman's mother was "Mina Buchold" on a wedding record and "Minnie A Bucholz" in the census records (b. Sep 1837 in Germany)

Eugenia Stehlow's mother was "Liebegott Maria Buchholz" (b. Sep. 5, 1836 in Germany d. Oct. 3, 1901)

I would assume they were sisters.

Group of kids DL

Looks like a whole bunch of girls with ribbons in their hair and one little boy..maybe two..that little one in the center might be a boy. It seems that most of these children have their hair parted down the center..so that is not a clue for the gender of the smallest child.

This photograph looks like it was taken sometime around 1900-1910.

CdV Michigan DL Antiques

The photograph is from C T Cornwell of Cold Water, Mich.

Cdv’s with rounded corners appeared in the 1870’s.  This dress appears to have dropped shoulders, which were popular in the 1860’s.   However her ears are showing (In 1865 ears were shown..but not before that.).   So I will guess 1875, her clothing was a bit out of style and I think she may have been wearing a snood.  A snood is a lace net that was tied tightly around your hair.

White Bow and Tie DL Antiques
L. (edited to S for Suph) Hikell Artist of Beresford So Dak was the photographer.

This photo shows the heavy silvering of the early gelatin silver photograph process.  Hints of blue or green can be seen in the dark areas of the photograph.  I will guess that this photo was taken sometime around 1905-1915.

This young lady wears a pinstriped blouse with a white tie that has a brooch at the neck and a pin.  The bow in her hair matches her tie.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update : From Iggy on the photographer.
The artist was Suph Hikell, born in "Asia" in 1875, immigrated in 1888, living in Prarie Township, Beresford Village, Union county, SD according to the 1900 US census with his wife Betsy (b. Feb. 1875 in S. Dakota) and son Edward (b. Dec 1896 in S. Dakota).

This is a Cabinet Card that I purchased at the Antique Shop in Detroit Lakes Minnesota.

Gal with hair clip DL Antiques

I will guess that this photo was taken about 1895.  Her dress seems to have wings on the shoulders, which was very stylish about that time.  She has a very ornate celluloid hair clip.

J.H. Hamlin was in Casselton Dakota/North Dakota during the 1880’s and 1890’s. Dakota was split into North and South in 1889.

The trim on her dress is lovely, I am seeing it as dark brown trim on a green dress.  She must have beautiful red hair..what do you imagine?

This photo is a Cabinet Card that I purchased in Solway Minnesota.
Emma and Friend Soloway Cabinet Card
Two lovely ladies all dressed up. They have some kind of Victorian style hair clip in their hair.  It looks like it could be a celluloid clip but I doubt that it would be considered a Mantilla Comb.

There are marks in the margin, possibly to indicate which woman is Emma ??.

South Dakota became a State in 1889, so this photograph was taken after that time.

I had no luck looking for the photographer.

Update : From Iggy
I think we are looking at Emma Spies of Nebraska. Parkston is about 80 miles north of Pleasant Valley.

When I saw this photograph something dawned on me.  Very few women with light colored hair had their photograph taken…if they did I have not seen any.

Update from Anonymous:
Gustav Borgen donated his collection (of glass plates ++?) to a Norwegian Museum (Norsk Folkemuseum). They have digitized (part of?) the collection, the portraits can be found here:

Update from Iggy:
He found the photo in the collection
http://www.primusweb.no/things/thing/NF/NFB.06484?pos=1548

Update from Anonymous:
The page gives the name as "Just t.". I'm not sure what to make out of that.

Just was a reasonable common given name for boys, but I can also find it as a surname (but rather rare, I think).

Gustav Borgen must have been quite recognized in his time. He has portrayed several known figures, for instance a much used portrait of Henrik Ibsen, and several of the Norwegian royal family.

I also find that he at young age worked for H. Ingeberg from yesterday.

Update From Iggy:
Berthe married Ole Olsen Aarstad on Feb. 28, 1853 in Ullensaker, Ankershus, Norway.

Update from Anonymous:
Hilton is not a very common name in Norway, but definitely Norwegian. The Hilton farms can be found at Kløfta, just north of Oslo.

My guess is that Bert(h)e Karina(/e) is this woman: http://bit.ly/oz0zlC.

If that is true, then we have a connection. Berthe's brother is Halvor Nilsen Hilton, whose son is Augustus "Gus" Halvorson Hilton, who moved to USA and married Mary Genevieve Laufersweiler. They had 8 children, among these Conrad Hilton (1887-1979).

Conrad Hilton started the hotel Dallas Hilton in 1925, and I guess you know where it leads...

Kløfta is a place in the municipality of Ullensaker (in Akershus, Norway).

Ole Olsen Aarstad was the goodfather of August, mentioned above.

Pr Antiques Cords of wood

Someone cut just a few cords of wood.

The barn in the background looks like it has one of those milk house additions off to the side and a Grainery is off to the right.  A milk house addition would have been built onto the barn so that you would have a reasonably clean place to separate milk and cream in a milk separator and a place to wash up all your separator parts.  We also kept the bucket and rags there that we used to wash up the cows teats with, and the teat medications and a container of Bag Balm sat in the window.  An old coffee can held the white papers that went into the milk strainer.  When we used milking machines all the milkers were washed in this room and set upside down to dry and the milker parts were all washed up morning and night.  ( If you cannot tell, I grew up on a farm, and I was in charge of the milk cows during the summer, first milking four cows by hand into a milk pail and then with automatic milking machines when the herd got larger.  I was also in charge of clean up.  I did not mind barn work..I liked it much better than house work.)

I will guess that this is a Jersey Bull and it was a prize possession.

( That is only a guess..we used to have a Jersey milk cow..she was gentle and of smaller stature than some cows.)

I enjoyed looking around in this barnyard, a wagon with different wheels, trees in the background and wildflowers or flowering weeds in the pasture.  I will guess that is a feed bucket, and there was feed in it to help catch the bull for a photo.
