Photo Number 518

This is a photo from the Antique Shop in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Clara Adam DL The photographer is Hunsicker at 824 Hamilton Street Allentown, PA.   I thought that this gals blouse was exceptionally pretty. This photo is most likely from the early 1900’s.  Charles M Hunsicker was at 824 Hamilton Street from 1898 to 1909.  In 1909 he moved to a different studio.
To keep up with this weeks theme of photos with names..here is what is written on back of the photo.

Thanks for stopping by, do come again:)

Update from Iggy:
Clara M(engle/Mengel) Adam born to Benjamin Adam and Catherine M. Mengel in February 1880 in Perry township, Berks County, PA. Note the wife of Irwin Walter Dietrich (photo 470/full circle 48) once lived with a Mengle family (in 1910).

  1. What an intricate blouse. My wardrobe consists of soft, cotton t-shirts!

  2. Hmmm. This is a tough one. If her surname was Adams (with the trailing "s"), there would be a Clara Adams living in Allentown proper. However, one assumes the labeling was correct, so the name becomes much, much, less common.

To add to that, Allentown, located in Lehigh County, is a major "market town" for a considerable surrounding area - and was well served by a great many trains from all over - as well as street cars and trolleys. Today it is well served by many major highways to all compass points.

If some one cares to take a stab at this lovely woman's age, perhaps a "possible fit" will turn up?

My best guess as of now is Clara F. Adam born about 1867, wife of William B Adam, living in Richmond, Berks County, PA. Richmond is just west of Kutztown, and on Route 222 (Kutztown Road - which turns into Hamilton Blvd as you head east into Allentown which is about 20 miles distant).

  3. Just a stab in the dark..I think that this Clara would have been born 1880 to 1890..that would have made her 18 to 29 years old when the photographer was there (1898 to 1909)..just a guess:)

  4. If I were casting a film I'd say she had the role of either the snippy wealthy woman in town or the librarian who tolerates no noise. Now perhaps if she were smiling it would be a different story.

  5. Given Full Circle 48 seems to place Clara in Kutztown, perhaps I got the correct woman (or maybe Clara Jr. which there was one, born abt 1908) Just doesn't fit that well, unless she just looks a lot younger than she is! I'll see if I can find a maiden name.

In the 1930 US Census, Clara and William Adam have moved to Temple, Berks County (a northern suburb of Reading, PA and still on the Kutztown Road about 10 miles west of Kutztown).

  6. The Clara that married William Adam maiden name was Forney.

  8. Clara Adam and Wilson P Mengle/Mengel were first cousins, 2-3 removes and next door neighbors. Clara's mother was widowed young, and Clara worked as a "servant" in 1910 - just as Katie Eva Bierman Dietrich was doing at the Mengel farm that year.

I've baffled as to Annie Banner though. I think she might of used her 1) middle name 2) been record with her first and middle name, and not last name OR 3) a school/church/camp friend from somewhere else... Hopefully someone will know. :)
